I tell every one I am 49 – unfortunately I have been doing that for 10 years. I have three kids and 5 grandchildren!! Love playing Civ – have played since the original game. Although would not want to play against any of my kids!!

29, live together with my girlfriend of 33 (who doesn't like civ, but 'allows' me to play whenever I want). I have a full-time job, but I manage to squeeze in 10 hours of civ each week (rough estimate) and still have time for a social life. Next year I'm going to get a part-time job and go back to college.

I remember and ASCII map game called Empire that I played on Tandy computers.
I remember playing a version of that on the campus DEC mainframe my first year of college. (Maybe it's just the nostalgia effect, but I never did find any PC version of Empire that I liked quite as much.)

And uh oh...now you've definitely got me going. Fellow thirtysomethings and above--recognize any of the following?

I once went to a summer camp on a university campus where, in addition to playing One on One on the counselor's Apple II (plug in two joysticks, add a room full of junior-high boys, and you've got extreme addiction potential), I would dial into the mainframe using an acoustic coupler:

to play Adventure.

"With what? Your bare hands?" Still cracks me up...and I think that was the precise moment I became hooked on thinking-type computer games.

(As opposed to the twitch-type...which has its place too. The first game I owned for my Apple II was Apple Galaxian, and I played the heck out of it. I still remember the sound of my dad playing it in the other room, in a vain attempt to beat my high score, as I was falling asleep at night.)

And then there was playing Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein on the Apple II at school, after we convinced our German teacher that it was educational ("Listen to the game talk! 'Halt! Ausweiss!' It's teaching us German!"). What fun...but the load times, oy, reminded me of waiting for Beachhead to load off the cassette drive of my friend's Commodore 64.

And then there was the hot competition among my nerdy high school crowd to see who would be the first to beat Karateka. Man, did I ever hate that bird...

Good times...good times...

I find the "ancient" category to be more than a little insulting. I've been playingCiv since Civ2 was new and computer games since I saw a newfangled Pong machine back in my college days (it was delivered by stagecoach, I think). FWIW, I'm 52.

Pfffft! My kids are older than some of these posters. My *grandkids* are starting to play Civ now (the oldest is 12). ;)

And I can't claim to even being the oldest poster in this thread! :p

(But yes, I remember punch cards, and vacuum tubes.... :D)

Edit: For the record, I'm 51. ;)

I'm 24 and I've been playing since Civilization I back in '92. Great game I love it and I will keep playing as long as I can!. I've been around since the days of the ol' 286XT 100MHZ processors.

Soon to be 16

I am all of half of 70, been using computers for over 27 years now and remember the days of Terminals, punch cards, 7.5 inch floppy disks, green monitors and my wrist watch not having more memory than the wind up spring.

And i have been playing civ since time began

I'm 13, and I feel sorry for anyone over 20 that plays civ. Really, GET A LIFE PEOPLE. If you stopped playing civ maybe you could get a date.

A date? I have a wife, a 21 year old son, a career. Everything I want in life. But excuse me, I appologize, being only 13, you have lots to learn.

When your 47 years old (Ancient) like me, you may realize just how much life you can waste, and still have lots leftover if your only alive enough to enjoy it.

I think it's time to throw the gauntlet at the feet of the non ancients. Ancients vs. non-ancients in a PBEM.
I'll take my ancients anyday. En garde young grasshoppahs.:ninja:

My money is on the ancients.

Mine $ too.
However, let me say there are some "utes" on Team K.I.S.S. (Idiot processor Pentium, lil' grasshoppah Own (12!) and Iroquois Pliskeninator) that I would put up against anyone. :p

I'm 54, been playing CIV since the beginning. It's just a matter of priorities but the real answer is that I don't watch TV except for two or three shows and one football game a week. Essentially after dinner it is all CIV.

Now that I am consulting instead of corporate I get in a little CIV on afternoons when I am not with clients.

To a 13 year-old I am ancient but proud!

One more point - this is no game - this is a challenge!

Oh to be 13 and know everything again.

I have been using computers since DOS 1.0, playing CIV since CIV 1 first came out, am married with 3 kids and I'm an actual Rocket Scientist.

And in addition to my Real Life, I play computer games for fun.

Ok as it seems like not all of you have read the ENTIRE thread I will have to say this again. The age ancient was more meant to keep all light hearted and was not meant to affend. I was going to put 30-55 or 60 but I knew that you older folk are mature enough and would find it funny. Due to the lack of option at this forum your are restricked to only 4 poll items which imo is not enough half of the time to make a good poll. And as to the age mistake if you are 30 and over 6 months on your way to 31 then put 30-40 if under 6 months then 18-30. Same goes for 18 ;)

Have fun posting, I really like reading all your posts and and comments!

Edit- I could have put this in the OT forum but I was more looking for the ages of ppl playing Civ4

Another Ancient one here, LOL! I celebrated my half century on this earth in March. ;) My eldest son will be 22 years old next month - he introduced me to Civ a few years ago and I think I have probably notched up more hours and game experience than he ever has (he's a stick-in-the-mud Civ II man, but I think the truth is he's scared of taking up the gauntlet against his mum with a newer version, lol!).

PS. No offence taken here at the 'ancient' category, BTW. I don't mind being one of the forum elders at all, it's quite amusing & refreshing to see the diverse age range here. ;)

No offense on my ancientness but I do aspire to advance from Major Idiot Whomp of the "Idiot Academy" to one of the "Grumpy old men". (see the SG forums for these old guys).
