The world map doesn't interest me in the slightest; never has. IMO it takes away a lot of the strategy of the early part of the game. The instant you found a bit of recognizable coastline you'd know where all the rest of the world was. That almot completely eliminates the excitement of exploration, for me.

looks as though you can define the type of random map your after much better in this one so i think ill be randoming it up mostly.

I'll play the World map early on. in Civ2 it was pretty fun. In Civ3 some of the fan-made maps were fun if you played one of the outlying Civs (Japan, England, China, Zulu, etc.). If you played a European Civ on the world map, well things just got too crowded too fast.

The random maps are fun too because of the exploration factor. That part is missed in World map games, but it usually seemed like the AI was cheating map-wise, so I didn't always consider it 'unfair'. I guess the World map would work best if all the land/water tiles were revealed before the Civs were placed. Then everything would be greyed out (like fog of war) and the Civs spawned.

Random maps are exciting to me, but World maps promote a sense of historical competition. I'll be playing both.

I'll check out the world map after a few go-arounds with random maps.

I like 'em all!

I will use it first, that way I can get used to everything else.

Then I will use the random map from then on.

You know, that's not a bad idea for training purposes.

Each tiem Civ is released I play Romans on the world map! ;-) If i can have random start posistions, I'll do that. I remember the large/huge world map included in Civ 3... I played as Romans and started in Argentina! I actually did very good in that game.

Game #1. Like a few others have said (JavalTigar), it's a training issue. Basically, I want to get comfortable with the game, learn what new things have been added or what old things have been modified. For instance, ICS is gone, so you'll have to get used to a completely different tempo of build-expand-attack. And with the change to units (no A/D, promotions), combat will have an entirely different feel to it.

Basically, when you're learning something new like that, adding more variables to the mix (like a random map) just confuses the issue. So, I'll play world map first, because it's the least confusing way to begin. Now, in the long term, I probably won't play it much at all.

Later... I like random maps more.

random is best

you have no idea what lies beyound the fog

I will probably use the would map on my first run, but it depends on the map and the game, so I can’t say for sure any way.

I might try it evnentually, but I don't like it for two reasons. 1, the sense of exploration is gone. 2, I have an unfair advantage over the AI because I know where important stuff (like the fact that there is another continent over there) is.

I always look forward to the new civs that are added in the expansion packs. Greater choice makes it much easier to fill the world with civs that are historically accurate in regards to their physical location on the map. I wonder how difficult it would be to create my own Civs so that I could place them all correctly. For example I would like to get the Zulus back and use them in the world map. Are there any opions on the difficulty of such a task?

Yes, I do intend to try it, but how difficult will it be in Civ IV? I'd like to not have to spend a great deal of time doing such work. I suppose it would be the art that would be the most difficult to create. Perhaps someone who has done such a thing could give me an idea of what this takes.

Actually the world map is about the only one I use when I play Civ games, time after time, hour after hour & I never get bored. The only bad thing this time around is that theres only going to be 3 Civs in the western hemisphere.
I usually play as the Aztecs so were gonna be pretty isolated for a few thousand years, only contacts being with the Americans & Incas.
