i nearly only play on world maps :)

there is rarely a game (but it happens) where i play on different (most custom made, nearly no random) maps

somehow i like it playing on the world map :) (but i might change starting positions, to get different challenges, and traits, as i do not want to play with the french, but like the traits, so i changed the french and roman traits)

I'm planning a scenario for Civ IV, set on a World Map, so I'll have to play it eventually just to see if I need a specialised one or if the premade one will do, and then to playtest once the scen is complete.

I voted 9th game, but only because there wasn't an option for "Sometime in the future of my cIV games, but not immediately"

I prefer the satisfaction of complete and utter discovery. Or, I'll just make my own maps and play them (after waiting a while so I forget what was where)
Me too. No option between "ninth game" and "never". Generally the world maps are too damned huge anyway. I don't like a game that spans months. In the end it's just an endless cranking out units and tedious process of conquering yet another city. At least, that's my experience.

I enjoy a world map now and again... I will probably try a couple of random ones first, though, to find my feet in the new game.

Hmmm might actually use it on my first play through. Might be handy to have some knowledge about the map while still learning the game :D

After that I'll go random, the exploration/discovery is such fun!

My thoughts exactly. Use it to learn the game mechanics, then switch to random when I'm ready to REALLY play.

I love playing on Earth maps - I'm the type of person who tries to play as close to historical accuracy as possible - placing my cities on real-world locations and renaming cities to what they would be in real life. Or it's always fun imagining what an alternate history would be like on Earth. The problem I have with random maps (at least the ones made by the game itself) is that the landforms tend to be "unrealistic." If somehow they improved the map generator to make better Earth-like landforms, I'd be up for random maps too I suppose.

I think I'll defintely play the world map first, because this will be the first time it will actually be on a globe so that should be interesting. Also I kindoff enjoy the whole feeling of "What could have been..." games on the world map. After that I'll probably play a lot of random games as I enjoy the exploring and stuffs.:)

I loved the world map in Civ1.
In Civ2 and Civ3 I liked them less. First they were too large, and in Civ3 with incorrect starting locations it was no fun anyway.

In the first game I will play to learn the game (tutorial perhaps), then I will try the world map.

A random map is nice that you get surprised, the world map can be nice to be a challenge. Still remember my Civ1 games starting as England.

So what is the correct number of civs to use in a world map? Unless you want to exerience a very crowded Europe then you will have to eliminate some of the possible civs there. Also, what civs would most like to have added to make the world map really entertaining?

I am the opposite of the guys who posted on the first page (I didn't bother reading the following pages before I started typing this) as I prefer playing the world. I play randoms too, but the world makes it feel more real for me, as I associate it with the real world more. I like Civ in part because I get off on the power trip and the power trip is greater for me if the map is the world I live in.

That's about how I feel about it, maybe...someday when I am in the mood but it is not any where near the top of my to do list. But you know what? thats my opinion and it is as valid as every one elses. Thats why Firaxis makes the game so that everyone has fun playing it. all in all the Civ series has the most for a diverse group of players.

I completely agree that there is no "right" answer to this World Map question. It is the variety of game play options that makes Civ IV so exciting. As much as I love playing on the World Map, I'm glad that there is also a Random Map possibility. So, no matter how you enjoy your late nights with Civ IV I hope that this game is as exciting/engaging as we all hope it will be.

With all of that said there is a meglomaniac side of me that is truly excited by the idea that I am gaining control of ever greater amounts of the territory that is mentioned on the news every day. Here's to the little Napoleon in each and every one of us. :king: :goodjob:
