How to assign new Tech. to a unit

I have made an new invention in the RULES.txt and given it all the right values.
But whenever I assign this new tech. to a unit (its Prerequisite advance)... ex. the paratrooper. By this I mean that I have remove combine arms and replaced it with my new tech.
But when I have done this and saved the rules.txt, CIV won't start I just get a error message.

now to my question:
can't I assign my own techs. to (ex.) units?

The parts in the text marked as bold have to be the same for the unit to be assigned to a tech. It's a bit confusing that the short name for a tech is after the comment-mark (semi-colon), but semi-colon seems to be used for other things too. If this isn't your problem/or doesn't solve it, you probably should ask in Scenario-forum.

BTW, where in Sweden are you from?
 
How exactly did you replace Combined Arms? You didn't delete/add any lines, or change the tech's abbreviation, did you?

Of, and funxus, that's because the CA abbreviation is a comment! It's just there for our information, so we know what abbreviations they decided upon. They are hard-coded and can not be changed...

Changing the comment obviously won't make any difference, but trying to use your own invented abbreviation somewhere else will only result in errors.
 
I solved the problem.
Apparently one can't rename the current "vaules" for the extra techs.

Ex:

Extra Advance 3, 3, 0, no, no, 0, 0 ; X3 <-- this last one, you can't change. If you do, like I did, the game won't start.

I did not replace the tech. Combined Arms. I just added another tech. that you need to have before you can invent Combined Arms. You follow?

I have added the following "new" techs to my civ:

Synthetic Fibers
Replaceable Parts
Scientific Method
Aerodynamics
Advanced Aerodynamics
Jet Engine

Can anyone name some more useful techs?
 
What do the techs do, what do they allow? Do they replace other techs?

Networking
Some modern cultural tech
Globalization

I don't know what they'd be good for though?
 
The new techs do not replace another tech.
They are just new techs. which I have implemented in to the tech tree.

Computers + Ecology = Synthetic Fibers (allows Stealth) => The new Units: Modern Paratroopers , Modern Armor & Spyplane

Combustion = Replaceable Parts (allows Machine Tools & Aerodynamics)

Medicine + Electricity = Scientific Method (allows Atomic Theory)

Theory of Gravity + Replaceable Part = Aerodynamics (allows Flight)

Flight + Radio = Advanced Aerodynamics (allows Adv. Flight)

Adv. Flight + Electronics = Jet Engine (allows Rocketry)
new unit: The Jet Fighter


That's what the new techs do.

funxus, networking was a good idea. Maybe I could combine that with Internet.. somehow :)
 
What about "Biology"? It could be a Industrial Age tech..

Computerised Networking? That isn't really a big discovery :hmm: Internet (which could, for example, make Stockmarkets, Marketplaces, Research Labs/The SETI Program... Just about everything more effective somehow), on the other hand, is a good idea IMO :)

That said, I'm not one to edit the game - that would make me confused when I go to play (especially Multiplayer) with a standard version.

Computerized Networking includes Internet.
With out the possiblity to integrate computers into a wast (World Wide) network, we would have never seen the dawn of Internet.
That's why I picked Comp. Net. instead of Internet. ;)
