How to create new techs

Ok, Im back to doing the tech tree(it has been on hold a WHILE)...

I added X-Y coordinates, and made them specific to an Era...but they are still not visible...

{edit} ignore below, I found Kal-el's grid...just what I needed

Does anyone have a graph of what the numbers for X and Y might be?...I need a range to experiment with, and I cant find it...My Tech(The test tech) is at:
X - 75 and Y- 175, it is specific to the first era...any ideas why it isnt appearing?...

I would also like to add, that if you have no visible techs, and you pick the tech tree...the game locks(please direct our scientists to research something)...and has to be Ctrl+Alt+del

Well, i thought i'd have a go at making techs. But i have run into a problem, which may be obvious to some, but not to me.

I followed odintheking's instructions, and when i made my 128 image, i thought i'd save it as a 256 bmp, and then loaded it up in wally and then exported it to pcx format. I replaced the existing tech icon (in this case the chemistry tech icon) and checked to see if it had worked, but it hasn't, the icon turns black with some pink pixels, and then when i reload it into wally, its all black.

So, i ask, can someone please be more clear on what to do, and perhaps tell me where i've gone wrong?

On a side note: How come the 256 colour icons used in the game are such good quality compared to mine? is it because i used a gif?

I'm so new to this...

Thanx Quinzy. I had given up. I wanted to learn how to make techs so I could perhaps help out in some scenarios, but I don't know how you did it. I'm assuming it was a palette problem?

I tried Plotinus'trick and couldn't get it to work. I used the Gimp. I resized the units_32.pcx to 128x128 and then pasted the pic into it. I tried copying both GIF and pcs of my desired picture, but it isn't working.
