How to deal with Sumeria and their damn chariots?

I started playing on emperor recently ( don't bash me for being a noob ) and each time i get Sumeria as a neighbour.... around 10 chariots in first 30 rounds , it's bad enough he has numbers stacked agaisnt me but those chariots have no weakness when facing against a spearmen unit

Unless i get a godly defensive starting spot , i just get wrecked

I had to fend him off only once so far, with 3 or 4 archers and a couple of warriors it was fine, ancient walls on the city he targets help too. Pick off one war cart at a time and soon he will sue for peace.

Try to get walls early, along with archers. Walls seem to keep them out well enough while your archers and city attacks clear away the spam. Then you just ride it out untill you get some tech that makes you able to push back. AI rarely pillages so it'll end up just milling around uselessly while you ramp up it's war-weariness with kills.

Spearmen don't get combat bonuses against War Carts though. War Carts specifically aren't weak to anti-cavalry despite being heavy cavalry.

Spearmen are crap in general, just use a bunch of warriors (5 less Combat Strength, 1 less maintenance, and cheaper to produce), backed by some archers and you should be fine, even in open terrain. If you're not, then you're doing combat wrong.

Get pikemen (still no bonus against war carts, but they are a good upgrade from spearmen), and swordsmen. Or just a wall of warriors with a bigger wall of archers. Get crossbows ASAP.

On harder difficulties 2 war carts can down a warrior in 1 turn, by then should die to walls and archers. As said above you just have to keep picking them off one by one, whilst keeping archers protected with warriors.

Once you get crossbows/swordsmen/pikemen, ie- outtech them ASAP, they are easy to deal with.

I do think they are insanely OP though. I'm playing my first game as Sumer finally. 3 war carts can take a capital until they build walls. And then you only need an archer or 2. They take 11 turns to build from the off, going down to 5 with the policy. And only cost 220 to buy. By turn 30, I had 6 war carts roaming about taking any capital in sight. I took my continent just after I reached the classical era. Didn't even make use out of oligarchy it was so quick.

You deal with them the same way you deal with anything else in the early game: spam archers, get them behind a city, cycle your archers to the rear when they become damaged. Once you exhaust the enemy's units push towards their undefended cities and make them yours.

Be Sumeria. Not only are they stronger and faster than any other starter unit, they are maintenance free. :)

Great. Now let's have the same discussion, but replace "Sumerian War Chariot" with "Indian Varus". :)

Archers behind sacrificial melee are again the answer. Especially if you get crossbows. Or massed suicidal spearmen could beat them on less resources maybe.

Or pull them into a crossfire from a city and encampment with archers inside each.

This is assuming against the AI, people might be a whole different issue.

Massed legions would seem tougher to me as they can take the first promo that gives them +10 defense against ranged, which is what you'd use to try and stop them.

Some people say Archers are OP but they are the Savior of these OP earlies and also help eureka so are just such a no brainer. Without them horsemen are the answer, they are just so tough... it takes me 3 turns with a galley or 2 to take out 1 embarked horsemen...

Damn Neptune and his sea horses!

Archers and walls tend to be the solution to handling pretty much any kind of overwhelming swarm of early game aggression from an incompetent AI opponent. That was the way it was in Civ V and seems to still be in Civ VI :s

Echoing with everyone said here, Archers are your best answer. Sumeria is sort of a one trick pony (donkey if we want to be pun appropriate) and if they fail with a war cart rush they are set really behind. Keep calm and skillfully place your archers. AI Sumeria is pretty quick to sue for peace once he loses 3+ war carts.
