Hi.
As I love huge Maps, Civ 3 can't provide enough city-names beyond "new .xyz" and "xyz 2" . Is there a way to add to the list the game uses for its suggestions?

Yes, there is.

1. I would like to create a Mod or Scenario. Where do I start?
First: Pick a name. For my example, the name I'll use for a scenario/mod will be "The Spanish Inquisition". Didn't expect that, now did you?

2. Open Civ3ConquestsEdit. If you have difficulty finding it, its in the Conquests folder. In the file menu of Civ3Conquests Edit (hereafter referred to as "CivEdit"), choose "Save as..." and enter your title, SpanishInquisition.biq in this case; make sure you save it in the Conquests/Scenarios/ directory, whether it is a mod or scenario.

3. I want to have custom rules, custom players, or a custom map. How?
Before I go further, here are the ramifications of those three customizations.
-Custom Rules: This means you will be able to edit the underbelly of the game. If you want to add or edit any units, buildings, civs, governments, you need this.
-Custom Map: This is fairly self-explanatory. If you want a map with or without preplaced cities and units, you need this.
*OH NO CITY AND UNIT BUTTONS ARE GREYED OUT!*
...This is a very common question. If you want to add cities or units, press the space bar to select a civ...you can now add cities or units to your custom map.

So I take it there is no way to expand the basic setup without resorting to editors and custom? :undecide:
Oh well, have to remember all those names no matter which Civ I play then..

Open up Notepad, write out all the names of the cities, print it out, and keep a copy there with you when you play.

Copy and paste would be a lot easier.

Plus, if you're adding new names of cities to an existing tribe, start adding them immediately under the capital. I can't remember what the cap is (maybe 22 or 36?), but cities will start falling off the end of the list. That's when you know you've reached the cap. If you try to add city names at the end, they may not be accepted. There are permenent blank lines at the end of the list. I guess you'd also find this out if you were creating a new civ.

There is a cap? Thought I could add as many as I please.
:thanx:

I hope it is more than 36 city names. I have had up to 70 odd cities in games before, would be nice to do this again with 70 individual city names. Sad if or when a historical mod can't have the real names in place.
I did a check in the editor.
I have 36 city names listed for the Aztecs, I added 4 more, restarted the Editor and they were all still there. True test is in a game. Let you know, maybe.

Hi,

Rome has got 44 and Russia has got 40 city names by default (or I have miscounted :crazyeye: ).

So the maximum number has to be higher than 36. ;)

Maybe there is a maximum for all civilisations together, but I have allready added several additional names (mainly for Germany, Skandinavia, England and Iroquois Nation) without any problem.

I was initially only correcting those annoying mispelled cities (for example Nuremberg instead of Nürnberg, Heidelburg instead of Heidelberg or The Haag instead of Den Haag), then it became more and more city names nearly by itself. ;)

the Netherlands has Holwerd, a 1650 people town at #10 and Lauwersoog, a 150 people town at #17.
The cities in the Netherlands are small, but not that small.

Hi Theov,

If it makes you feel better:

The original german city list included Salzburg. And Salzburg is of course located in Austria and not Germany.

Also the list is surprisingly short (16 cities compared to the 25 of the Netherlands). Thats one city for each federal state (Bundesland).

I wonder how many errors are included in the countries or long gone civilisations I do not know. ;)
