I am trading with other Civilization my contacts for theirs however, I get contact with the new people, but how do I actually talk with them  they are not in my foreign advisor section as far as I can tell

if you can't find them any other way click on the tiny "D" button on the bottom right of your screen to the right of the screen that shows what unit is active. It looks the same as your "V" (victory status) button and a few others. This is assuming you are using C3C.

I was wondering about this too. If I there are more than 8 civs, how do you show the extra civs in the diplomancy screen, apart from clicking on the other civs unit (not always practical if they are far away)

Just use the shift-D keystroke. A list to chose from will pop up, containing all civ you have contact with.

In Vanilla, when playing with more than 8 civs, you need to hold down a couple of modifier keys while clicking on one of the leader-heads (except your own) on the foreign advisor screen (F4). On a Mac you can either hold <shift> and <control> while clicking or hold <shift> while right-clicking. On Windows, I suppose, holding <shift> while right-clicking should work.

Anyway, if you do it properly a contextual-menu will pop-up that contains the hidden civs.

In conquests there is a drop-down menu in the upper left corner of the foreign adviser page.

Well, that's where it is supposed to appear. I have been running in windowed mode on a Mac, and this dropdown menu actually appears outside the boundary of the main game window. It is very peculiar. So depending on your settings and monitor resolution, you may have to hunt around somewhere toward the upper left part of your screen for the rectangular gold button that says, "More Civs".
