I have Civ 1 on a widescreen laptop using Windows Vista, but it doesnt work.... it says its not compatible with my full screen, and iv tried using all four different graphics modes...

Who can help?

I wonder if it will work on a windows XP widescreen laptop. I just ordered one. (I have an XP desktop with a "non wide" screen and Civ 1 works perfectly.) (I assume we are talking about Civ Win not Civ DOS.)

stwils

Does Vista have "windows 95 compatibility mode" as an option under the properties on the executable? That might work. If you have the dos version, try Dosbox. That works for me.

Dos Box works perfectly with CIv and Vista - you can even put it in full screen mode.

The Windows 95 compatibility mode does not work for it, don't waste your time doing this. Dos Box is quick as anything. Go for it!

Civdos in Vista. Holy crap if that ever works the universe would probably implode.

I opened this topic under the impression it was supposed to be a guide. Please, in the future master the question mark before abusing the exclamation mark. Thank you!

DOSBox indeed works perfectly in Vista as well as Linux for Civ1.

Unfortunately I own the version that has the Advisor Bug, so I had to download an abandonware copy or just turn off advisors.

I seem to remember there being a patch for this, but I can't find it anywhere. I'd like to play my original copy, because the pirated version replaces some text with vulgarities.

i don't suppose the replaced text is located in the text files (ie blurb0.txt, story.txt etc), in which it would be trivial to change the text back to what it is supposed to be.

regarding getting a new version of Civ 1, i did a quick search of ebay.com and half.ebay.com and found several instances of Civ 1 and Civ Chronicles for sale.

Admittedly, i'm not sure why at least one of the Civ 1 listings cost 70.00 (no box) where as Civ Chronicles, which includes Civ 1, multiple versions of both civ 2 and 3, as well as Civ 4, cost $35.00 (Brand New & Sealed in USA Retail BOX), but then i guess people will sell for what they think they can get for it...

CivDOS - use DOSBox
CivMac - use Mini vMac w/ System 7
CivWin - Run under a compatibility mode in the latest OS it worked on

Yeah it does work. And weirdly enough the universe didn't implode. Yet.

The "patches" were rolled into the main civ.exe but not, to my knowledge, ever publicly distributed. I don't believe the Instant Advice bug was ever completely fixed.
