I can never get anyone to be anything more than annoyed with me during the game. The only time I get polite is if I sit and give them a ton of techs and then they only like me for a few turns. What I am doing to turn the off?

I would also like to point out that the last 3-4 games I have not started a single war and only fight if I am attacked or if someone demands something and then I say no and they then declare war.

Obviously there are other things going into it but I don't know what the problem is. I also trade constantly and usually give the PC the better end of the deal.

Thanks in advance.

I discovered the same, I think it is just the size of your empire, if you grow too big they hate you. Sometimes I play OCC, there it is possible to have them all polite or gracious (which doesn't keep them from bully you)

Establish an embassy (control-e) after you discover writing and sign a Right of Passage with everyone. They should stay polite unless you look like a good target to invade.

are you playing PTW or vanilla CIVIII? i find that in PTW, the civs do get annoyed at you more often, but it really depends on how you play. for the most part, if you sit idlely and peacefully off in your own empire, trading when they ask to trade, and giving them maps or whatnot when they ask for it, they will not stay polite for long. just my assumption, but its similar to being ignored by someone if you dont initiate any of the trades. what i find very effective in keeping everyone happy is just making sure i talk to them every 20 or so turns. make trades, dont just give them the cheap territory or world map. that becomes worthless to them when you get past the early parts of the game. trading techs and luxuries or resources will get other civs to be gracious with you if you keep it up and initiate some of the trades.

i find culture also plays a factor. when the other civs are in awe of your culture, trades are more likely and easier, assuming they arent annoyed with you already. if they are annoyed, get them to be polite, wait two to five turns, and negotiate some other trades. this will help to create nicer civs. if they are constantly annoyed with you, making them happy wont necessarilly keep them happy.

on side note, keep those that might be a threat to you polite or gracious, but you can pretty much ignore those with weaker militaries meaning advanced units as well as size. ignore as in you dont have to work hard at keeping them polite, but if you can, never hurts to have another friend.

Like Dave said, establish an embassy and sign a ROP. Almost everytime I see a civ annoyed with me, they instantly go to cautious once I establish the embassy, then go to polite when I sign a ROP. They will be gracious if you are at war with the same civ that they are at war with, and sometimes when you trade strategic resources with them (especially if they are at war). MPP can also get a civ gracious, but that is much riskier.

In the macintosh succession game djb2, it really helped to trade maps each turn. It is tedious, but will net you a small profit if done intelligently and it definitely improved relations to everybody. Trade, trade, trade.
