how to improve the seas...

The last part is definitely a b*tch. However, I often get maps where a canal would allow me to either access bodies of water that are otherwise inaccessible, or cut 10+ turns out of transport times, which is huge. Unfortunately, I don't often play as the Lanun.

Thats where Tsunami is important. Unfortunately, it is a late game spell and only has a small chance of turning land into coast.

You could always build a city on the bottleneck if it's only a tile wide. It's not a true canal, but it's better than nothing. If you're Lanun, you can widen it by another tile by building a Pirate Cove just outside the city.

This reminds me of another thing; are Pirate Coves pillageable? If they are, you could have a ship set up to constantly pillage your own coves, build a new cove in the adjacent tile, and make a pseudo-canal that way.

I tried that once, but all the ships I had nearby were pirates and HN doesn't allow pillaging, I think. Come to think of it, I think that they are pillagible but that ships are unable to pillage, so you might need a couple of Drowns if you want a super-canal.

that would consume a lot of workers so it would be much cheaper to tsunami it

hower- connecting diffrent types of bodies of water causes problems
(oceans, seas, and lakes)
which is very unfortunate

I am pretty sure there are distance requirements on Pirate Coves.

Of course ships can pillage. You must not build work boats very often.

Fishing boats are automatically pillaged when a ship (or sea animal) enters a tile containing the enemy. Ships do not have the pillage ability the way land units do.

Who said anything about work boats having pillage? Your ships do, unless they can enter enemy territory. The only way you can pillage an in-place work boat is by clicking the pillage icon.

I agree that sea travle has become slightly boring. The only sea unit I ever build is the pirate for the hidden nationality. I like your idea on spells. I think you should have to sacrifice an adept to allow ships to learn spells. Overall, I think that with the new AI improvements in BTS (particularly the claim that their ability to control ships is better), these improvements will be very good.
