How to keep your rivals polite instead of furious?

I always play on monarch or emperor level, but one thing that has be frustrated is always having the AI either annoyed or furious with me. In my latest 5CC emperor game I started off with everyone polite for quite a while. We traded, I gave away the occasional luxury, pretty good times on the whole. Then I seemed to do something to really piss people off cause they went all annoyed on me.

So my question: are there any special tricks to keep your rivals polite with you? Or at least how to keep them from being furious?

I think my problems might have had something to do with trading with someone's enemies, but it was a real pain since I couldn't get very far in terms of making alliances.

Donate gold to them! It will sweeten them up no end. Trade maps as often as you can. Dont intrude on their territory not unless you have ROP. Dont raze cities you capture. Dont break deals and if you attack someone finish them off they will only cause trouble later on.

If my unit pass their territory, but ends its turn on neutral ground, will the AI still react negatively(if no ROP)?

No, in fact even if you land in their territory after they leave the AI 4gets it even happened, unless war was declared.

I believe it does, but on a smaller scale. Infact, I am playing a game where I am at war with the Zulus. They declared war on me right after my scoutting horseman intruded their terriotory on the first move and left their terriotory the second move. They killed my obsolete horseman right away. it was a huge shock to me. I am also restricted to fight back because zulu has 2 mpp with 2 of my neightbors. luckily, there is a 3 square chokepoint where I am forced to build non-stop defense. At least I am getting a whole lot of great leaders and elite units.

I could be wrong about this, so don't hold me against it, but...

I think the AI asks you to leave immediately when you step onto a tile that a citizen is working. IIRC, a tile can not be worked with a non-native unit on it. This might be just doing war though. Just a couple things to throw out there.

You wont incur anyones wrath for passing through someones turf in just one turn!If you take two turns you will. You will only lose production if the unit stays on the tile for a long time. This is why most civ's get angry when you tresspass. Some civ's will declare war on you for tresspass if you do it continuely.

Is it true that YOU also can't say "leave or declare war" (only "leave") unless enemy is on city radius tile?

Whether they politely ask you to leave or if they force you to leave depends on some obscure formula that takes into account the # of units*, their proximity to a city center tile, and # of turns you have already been in their territory. Doesn't matter if the tile is being worked by a citizen or not.

*Note, that this is 'military' units. A unit with 0 attack (scouts, workers) are treated a little differently.

A unit can sit on anyone's tile forever long as they want and nobody loses production. A civ only loses production when an ENEMY unit is on the tile. If you are at peace with the civ, you can still work the tile.

Attitude hits for a civ booting you out of their territory only lasts for a single turn (the attitude drops when it is the AI's turn and they tell you to move, but then when it is your turn again, the penalty is already gone).
You can go into a civ's territory every single turn for 100 turns in a row and their attitude will not change.
