In warfare, the idea has always been to bring an army into a nation, capture as many cities as possible, and then defend those cities as to not risk losing them.

In Civilization 3, you can practice both sides of that statement.

If you are at war, dont expect the other nation to wait around while you attack them. Instead, you must make it so they have no way to enter your country and take the cities that are production giants and take up a bulk of your economy. However, you also do not want to let smaller and more corrupt cities be taken, because they also have great potential.

Therefore, you must make sure that any border you share with another country is well guarded so they cannot send units by land (this is the most common method of sending units in the Ancient and Mideival era). To make sure that you can attack, then exhaust your troops in war or garrison of cities, and then attack once more without being attacked, is the key to survival in warfare.

To guard a border, place units on a key strip of land or, as i call it, a "hotspot". The hotspots have to be places where there are the most enemy troop movements into your country. A hotspot should be guarded by atleast 4-5 units on each tile to ensure that the enemy cannot use it to send their units. The hotspots are usually 4-5 tiles wide, so you expend 20-25 units simply to stop the idea of land attacks. For example, if your empire is located on a peninsula, you must first colonize the entire peninsula, then guard the area where the peninsula rejoins the mainland. This is the "hotspot" because it will not be very wide, and it will be the ideal place for the enemy to launch an attack.

However, if you have an empire that can be attacked from all fronts, you want to make lines of control. Lines of control are lines of units (only 1-2 units per tile) that guard an entire border. Lines of controls may look expensive, but if you plotted the America/Canada border on a HUGE map, the line of control on that border would only cost 50 gold/turn.

Now that you know HOW to guard your borders, I will tell you the pros and cons.

Pros-
-Never face a massive land attack again.
-Never allow other friendly civilizations to explore your land. If you keep your Territory Map a secret for a while, it will gain tremendous value.
-Create an area where you can launch attacks from, then build more units and send them out to keep attacking. As your units get depleted, they will be reinforced by new, strong units.

Cons-
-The amount of money needed to cover hotspots and lines of control range from 50-75 gold/turn. However, it ensures that you will gain more cities, resulting in more gold from city revenues.

All in all, these techniques are very useful and I hope you utilize them in the future.
