This is gonna sound VERY SJW but if it's in the same spirit, it's from the other side. I've wanted to play Red Front for a LONG time, because it's one of the best Civ 2 scenarios period, and I agree. The problem is....I hate the Nazis, but I don't the Communists to win either. I know what the COmmunists will do when they crush the Axis, and I don't want any part of it. It kind of possible to imagine with a World War II game that the your version of Hitler is just a thug, just an imperialist Ceasar or Rhodes of the East and not Leopard to the Slavs and the Jews, because while the Nazis until they started World War II were bad they "only" killed about 10,000 people, which is Putin level bad but not monster bad,

Stalin already has a track record in the millions, possibly tens of millions in 1941. And I know what he did historically. And for me all games are really about the narrative, at the heart. The only way I can play like from the German side is to say THIS version of Hitler sin't doing the Holocaust, he's ruthless but he's not not a monster. He's carrot and stick guy.

So I figure I have to modify the game, and probably the events to make it so I can stomach playing "the Communists" and I figure to make that tolerable, I'm gonna need to alter the following:

1. Stalin is probably going to have to go. Not just be renamed but be removed/suicided, killed at some point in 1941, and replaced with someone who's more likely to not be a murderous thieving awful person.
2. Make peace with the Ukrainian by promising and coming through with ending collectivization
3. I don't mind making eastern Europe into Warsaw Pact satellite states, as long as there's something in the events where they aren't made Communist states, just satellites, maybe corrupt democracies dominated by social democrats, but Bulgaria and Romania and Yugoslavia (and possibly Greece and Italy) retain their kings or get traded by influence swapping with Britain
4. A more just realignment with the poles east of the Curzon Border and if there's an east Germany, they keep their 1937 borders, including East Prussia.
5. In all cases, whatever tech have to be researched, whatever costs have to be paid, the Red Army acts with utter professionalism toward civilians, even German ones.

Maybe none of you have ever thought about it before but every time I try and play Red Front, I have to put the game down and say, I can't do this, I couldn't do it any more than play as or in service of the historical Hitler.

Has anyone else felt this way? And whether or not you have, any suggestions on how to implement changes that would soothe my conscience? Cause this isn't like playing a Wehrmacht or Red Army soldier who's fighting for one's country and one's own survival and has no decision-making powers other than to try and not get shot, this is different, the chains of responsibility are higher at the strategic level.

I was thinking of playing a hotseat as the Soviets AND Americans, but I don't know if the Americans when they show up, are OP as ****.

Konig, for future reference...This kind of question is really better served being in the Civ2 Discussions area:

I think you really have to detach yourself and try not go into mental rabbit holes with this subject matter. Your involvement here is your playing of a digital computer game with pixel icons representing something from an era that you have no physical link with. Genghis Khan's armies killed scores of millions - Should we avoid Civ2 scenarios about him too? Most scenarios have at least one (or many) war leaders with questionable records...That's history.

Humans are not any different today, so I don't personally see why we should think we have some moral imperative not to face up to past mistakes too. One way to look at things is that Civ2 teaches people about the past, and about our less uplifting aspects as well as our progress. At the end of the day, you are quite welcome to rebuild Red Front as your own custom scenario and edit it as you see fit. Keep on civving!

Konig, you should probably just force yourself to play this scenario without any of your proposed changes. It would be good for you, I think.

Curt,

I apologize. I figured this was a scenario, it didn't go in general discussion. May I have a guideline when scenarios are involved which go in scenario league and which go into general discussion?

Also, I'm not complaining about the scenario's existence. I fully support the right of people, in general, to play and design whatever scenarios they want. The issue is entirely personal, it's on me. And see below

@JPetroski You've been really helpful and nice to me, and hope this doesn't come off the wrong way because this is JUST for me. I haven't got into the new civilization games and never really enjoyed the old ones in and of themselves because they are contextless sandboxes. Context is needed for me to have fun. So I can't play Red Front like chess, not for long. Let me tell you what I have done in the past. I've played three or four turns as the Soviets and my blood chills more with every turn. Cause I KNOW what I'm going to do: I'm going to crush Finland in the spring, and "liberate" Norway, at least northern Norway to get as much Lend Lease as possible (cause this is roleplay as much as strat). I know very very well what fate awaits the Finns if Stalin gets his full clutches on them, what he's already done to them, and that they'll suffer every day until 1991.

I can't do it.

You can make a Lee Kwan Yew (the authoritarian visionary of Singapore) out of a Fascist, in fact, he was accused of being a Fascist a lot but left a prosperous, orderly city behind him, but certainly not through democratic means. You can even do that with Ghengis Khan over the long term, which kinda happened with their re-opening of the Silk Road and the Caravanessy system. You can't do that with Communists, even if they don't mass murder, which they always do, they are economic locusts leaving poverty and misery and bleakness behind them.

Now between the annihilation of the Nazis and the softer slavery of Communism, the latter is better, but it's not good enough. My body recoils. And if I played the game like a chess match I would enjoy it as much as chess, that is to say, not at all.

Rename Stalin as Kirov, and in your head, play in an alt-universe where Stalin got assassinated and soviet Russia was utopian. Problem solved.

... or even more simple: If you have such problems with some scenarios, don´t play these scenarios. :dunno:

I'm not really seeing the point of this thread being here, so I will let it run for a bit longer, then close it. Again, I invite @Konig15 to take this to aforementioned discussion thread.

We make Civ2 scenarios, but cannot operate as a support group for people with an existential crisis over playing them.

Any idea who the mods in the Civ2 general discussion thread are? Maybe have them move the whole thread there. Or just ask an admin. to move it.

I don't mind moving the thread at all, I don;t think I can do it though I think an admin or the proper moderator would have to do it. But moving it is A-OK with me.

@Konig15
Just repost the question there. I am closing this thread now, hopefully with everyone's agreement.

I have scenarios to work on. Some involving nasty dictators and generals.
