How to research as fast as possible?

I really don't understand why some people are able to reach space race victory in 1810. In 1810 I am just in industry age. I know that increasing science rate, scientist, libraries, universities and certain wonders will boost research speed, but still my research speed is not fast enough eventhough I am in democracy. Are there any other ways to speed up research besides the method mentioned at above?

Trade.

The thing is that the higher the difficulty level, the faster the AI is able to research. When the AI researches quickly (Emperor+) you can get techs very quickly by trading with them.

There are other things too. You need to make as much gold per turn as possible. Did you road and railraod ALL your tiles?

And 1810 is not very early. I've seen comments from people being able to launch the space ship in the 13th century, although I myself am incapable of doing that.

Strategies are completely different on each level.
On the easy ones, pick a SCI Civ, prefereably Russia, play against all other SCI Civs, research like mad, and gift your (otherwise useless) comrades into the next era each time, pulling the scientific slingshot to get a second tier tech.

On the high levels, you can be sure the AI is helpful for research, or fueling your research with cash; also, you can be sure the AI will research several techs for you (namely Nationalism, Invention).
Propably the hardest time is Regent/Monarch; here, the AI is a bit unpredictable, so you cannot tell what (and if at all) they research. OTOH, they have no substantial cash to offer. So here, it is indeed 'milking' at max; get huge, use lots of Scientists etc.
But, you will launch faster with 25% land on Chieftain as well as Deity than you would with 50% on Regent :crazyeye:.

Yep, space is possible around 1200. (any level chieftain - deity)
On the low difficulties, you should be able to maintain 4 turn research already in the early middle ages. On the higher levels you will most likely only be able to get to 4 turn research by the end of the middle ages and you might get some 5 or 6 turn techs in the industrial age. On the high levels you make up for this by trading from the AI. On the low difficulties, you can expect less from the AI. All together, they should be able to provide roughly the same date.

The key things:

-Have many good cities. Your core should be as big as it can be. Every city that has not insane corruption should have all science improvements and all tiles fully improved.

-Conquer many cities for scientists and ICS the conquered ground. If you capture 50% of the world and have 200 little vilages in this terrain providing at least 200 scientists, this will help your research greatly. In C3C even so much that getting these scientist cities is a priority over universities. You must be a skilled warrior and be able to get a decent empire around the year zoro.

-Research that what the AI does not research. Experience and some information elsewhere on this site should tell you what the AI will research. Research the other things and use all means needed to get the techs from the AI.

-Keep scientific civ's alive and trade their free techs in the turn they get them. If they are behind in techs, gift them to the next age so you can get their techs.

-Build ToE for the free techs. If possible, try to time it on the moment you enter modern age. (first trade with the AI for their free scientific techs at the exact moment you enter MA.

Most importantly though, you need the skills and patience to have a really strong game on all aspects. You must have a strong opening alowing you to build a big empire both on terain, science and military. Then, you must be the warrior who takes the world quickly.
First try and see if you can go for a fast domination victory. 0AD - 800AD depending on map settings. Look at some gotms, play them and compare to the results from other players.

Incidentally, what are the actually mechanics of the scientific slingshot? I've never been able to make it work. Here's what I do:

Acquire the last required tech of the age.
Choose 'the big picture' from the popup that tells me I got the tech.
Choose the science advisor screen.
Click on the scientific civ of choice, and gift them/sell them all the techs they need to advance as well.

Now here's where it goes haywire. The next-age tech acquired by my pet civ doesn't show up immediately for trade. I have to close out the science advisor screen and come back in in order to see and be able to trade for it. But as soon as I close the discussion screen, the interturn continues, and I get the usual first-tier tech.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is the procedure I describe actually correct, and I'm just misremembering what I tried to do? (It's been a while since I've played for fast science.)

You shouldn't have to close the diplo window. Just gift them the techs. Then, you're back to the opening diplo window of the leader; and thus, you can trade again.
But, that isn't even necessary. I for one prefer to gift them all into the next era. Simply because Feudalism and Nationalism are so overpriced, you want to have as much Civ learning it as possible. As long as you don't choose a tech for your own research, you can conduct trades.
Note the whole thing doesn't work if you buy the last required tech for era advance; in this case, you get your freebie before you can make any trades (in the very moment you learnt the last tech of the era before). In other words, the slingshot only works IBT, not during your actual turn.

You need to have the 'next era splash' showing up and access the big picture from that screen; thing is that the splash only shows up (AFAIK) when you research the last tech yourself, so 'acquire last tech' means actually researching it.:(
When you got to the big picture via the splash, you contact the other civs via F4 and possibly free up some gpt via F1. If you're really lucky, you could even get a third level tech for free (AI has 2nd level techs already and can afford these; this might happen on ancient/ma era change in the first place).

edit: oops, kinda ignored Doc's post
