How to save a 2-player hotseat game??

We started playing civ2 gold yesterday with my wife and today we were surprised to find out that the game we saved cannot be reloaded. Only her Aztec army is still in human control and player 1 (me) is now computer controlled.

This is confusing, how do you save and load 2-player hotseat games so that the other player does not get "lost" in the process?

I can't be this stupid because I have played a ton of games and I have used computers daily for over 10 years now.

What's the extension of the savegame, .sav or .hot?
How did you load the game? Through the main menu's "Load a Game" option? Or by choosing "Multiplayer Game" first?
