Because there are lot of new players lately, I thought i would post this.

Here are a few thoughts on Persia.

Your goal is continental dominance, IE eliminate 3 or 4 AIs early, then coast to a win or keep conquering. Persia’s colors are red and gold. This means aggression and money.

Your tools to accomplish this are the following:

First you have a readily available resourceless UU. It’s only 2 techs away. Four Immortals supported by a GG and maybe a spare archer/chariot will easily kill a close neighbor on Emperor. Second, this UU gets a strength buff during a GA and your GAs themselves are longer. You want to time your first GA to go off when you are ready to strike your first victim. So, I suggest hooking up any luxuries that you start with ASAP and keeping the singles for happiness. Then either keep the GA going and hit the next guy or wait for the next GA and then hit the next guy. There is a free GA in the Liberty tree after 3 picks and there is one in the Piety tree after three picks. But there is also a lot of value in the Honor tree which you will want to take advantage of. First, a free GG and a bonus to Immortal production at 2 picks, then a Discipline, then Professional Army.

Your social policies might look like this: Liberty opener> Free Worker > Honor opener > Free Great General > Discipline or free GA from Liberty> etc. Then open Piety and work towards the next social policy GA.

To start, consider a scout then a monument as a first build, you want to find the enemy and perhaps pop a culture ruin. Tech Mining>BW then Pottery>Writing>Philosophy to unlock Piety. That would be the order for a fast attack. If you have space for a second city between you and your first victim, you could go Mining>Pottery>Writing and then BW>Philo. But, you want to develop your capitol such that it has enough production to keep pumping out Immortals at a decent rate when the time comes, so a semi OCC opening might be best. Consider a Barracks and possibly Heroic Epic when time allows. This means working hammer tiles and also working tiles with at least one gold in it to really maximize all those GA turns.

Finally, once you start your attack, you will spawn GGs from kills which themselves can be used for GAs. So that’s about 4 GAs right there, all at extended duration. So, 60 turns of increased production, increased gold and increased attack power. That should allow you to sew up enough territory to secure a win. All it takes is a little prep work and capitol development so that you can crank out the Immortals and overrun your enemies. Puppet the AI capitols for Satrap Courts, raise everything else and replace with your own cities at your leisure. Continue filling out Honor and use all those Immortals for garrisons after the continent is secure. Open Tradition and grow all your cities with that tree.

My problem with the Immortals is the short period in which you can build them. By Civil Service, which many aim for early, Pikemen obsolete Immortal training.

The Persians benefit greatly by the Chichen Itza's effect on Golden Ages. And those bonuses works the whole game for all types of Golden Ages.

Yes, thats the conventional wisdom. I'm suggesting that you can forego all that and create multiple GA's instead of fewer longer GAs. A big boost from Civil Service is the farming and I thinkn Persai's traits are better suited for gold and production than farming.

I also think the buffed up Immortals via Honor, barracks, HE etc would serve just as well as pikes.
