For those having difficulty completing saved games after downloading the latest (July 2020) patch, Carl Harrison, Firaxis QA, has posted the following instructions about how to roll-back to a pre-patch "legacy" build of the game:
We do have a way for you to continue your in-progress games from before the update. If you wish to do this, right click on Sid Meier's Civilization VI in your Steam library, then select Properties. In the window that appears, navigate to the Betas tab and enter the code ineedlegacyaccess into the text box. This will unlock a Legacy beta branch, which you can then select from the dropdown. You are able to finish your games there. Make sure to turn this beta branch off when starting a new game!
These instructions are also contained in a sticky thread in the Civ 6 - Technical Support forum.

So they're finally taking advantage of this feature. Good for them!

He posted it in a Bug Report thread. I’ve no idea whether all pre-patch saves are broken by the patch.

The problem of using the legacy branch is that if you have a save that's saved by the updated version (1.0.3.301) then it won't load. You have to roll back to a save that is saved by 1.0.2.39.

I can say that at least two of my prepatch saves are still functioning.

My wife and I just fi wished a game we've been playing for about a week without any serious issues.
