Hello all
I purchased Civ6 from steam over Christmas and so far I have played 5 games on the easy level & lost every one.

I have read some of the info on this site, but was hoping to find what order I should choose the tech to hopefully get ahead of the AI players. The last time I played civ, was the original Civ 30 years ago, which on easy level I could win.

Regards
Stephen

Hello and welcome!

I think there is a million tips around, especially since there are so many possibilities to win. I always end up trying to do everything, which results in losing the game. I have played every Civilization Game (bar the remake of Colonization) since Civ 1. Not to the same extent as a lot of the people that post here. So I tend to play on the easier difficulties.

I have just come back to Civ 6, after bying the latest expansion. I did not play the standard game very much. So I guess we are in kind of the same boat. I am on my second game. The first game was lost on points. But I feel I have more control on this one, as I have a goal, and I know a bit more about the mechanics. Plus I got a few tips from some of the recent threads here.

As for research, I think a few tips would be:

- Research the tech needed to work on whatever resources you have at your starting city.
- Try to do the quests for boosting the research, to shorten the time.
- Could be smart to try to reach the tech needed for your unique unit. Especially if it is for a militaristic civ

My own, self-experienced beginners tips are this:

- Play and explore the game and the aspects and mechanics. I guess you have done that a bit now after 5 games.
- Focus on a victory condition. Select a leader that fits this. (Google or ask here). Not all victories are straight forward, though.
- Early game, try to expand as much as possible. Find the best places for cities.
- Build cities at rivers or coastline. Preferably at bonus resources and luxury resources. Later on at strategic resources (like horses and iron) when you have researched the tech.
- Build a scout and some military to take care of barbs while building settlers and builders. Scouting reveals new places to settle and "goodie huts" which can give you a nice boost.
- Forget wonders, unless you have nothing else to build. But usually you can build another settler or builder or military unit.
- Try to do what is required to get the tech boosts when researching. Often you can wait a bit with a tech, and research something else, while completing the "quest" for the boost.
- Trade routes can be used to boost new cities. When you have a free trader. relocate him at the new city and trade with your own cities to get a food and production boost.
- Speaking of trades. Do not forget to do trade deals with the AI. I forget this all the time.

I will also recommend looking at the Game of The Month Master list. I have tried playing some of those games earlier, and they are quite fun challenges, that also give you some tips on how to (or not to) play certain civs and maps.

On an easy level, start with a builder then a scout then 2 settlers.
Research wise mining then pottery then campus and place the campus where you get the best +’s shown when placing.
Culture wise, craftsmanship then foreign trade then early empire and then slot the 50% settler card.

Then build a few slingers with the agoge card in place for a discount... do not research archery before your slingers are complete.
Then build a few warriors, upgrade your archers then build more settlers while your army either defends or looks for someone to conquer.

You should get the hang of it with that.

it doesn't seem to matter which way I play the other AI countries always seem ahead of me with everything?

In every game I play they are ahead of me also... but then I catch up by having lots of cities and lots of campus, you need to play to turn 100 or more. Look st the link below on chop examples, it gives you some idea.

I am on turn 1063/1500 I concentrate on building science items but everyone else always seem to be ahead of me, I also find that whenever I build a new city, it always seem to want a lot of turns to make anything?

Playing epic or marathon can be a challenge before learning the way to play, I suggest learning on standard speed. Try a few games to 50 or 100 to get used to what to do at the start. It is hard to play catch up later.

also my capital shows 6 spies next to the name?

what should be my first 10-20 moves if I want to go for a science win? tech & civs?

Maybe share some screenshots from your current game? (or a save file)

General advice for specific victory conditions can easily be found elsewhere on these forums or youtube (personally I learned a lot from The Saxy Gamer's channel). Also check out this topic. Still has a lot of useful beginner tips!

I think for more specific advice to turn your current games into a win it might be more useful to at least have a good perspective of what you're dealing with.

On a personal note: too me Civ VI isn't a game in which a specific and strict build-order or standard set of moves is going to make a player much better.

Good luck towards your first win! I'm almost certain it's just one more turn away :)

I have seen people mention governors in the game, how or where do I see them?

If you are playing with standard rules, there are no governors. However, if you are playing either the Rise and Fall expansion or Gathering Storm expansion, you get governor titles by getting certain civics in the culture tree. You use these governor titles to appoint new governors or promote your existing governors that you appointed earlier. Each governor has different abilities that you can see on the governor screen. The governor screen is where the civic and tech trees are located, in the top left corner. The icon looks like a hand with a pencil.
Here is a link to a more detailed explanation:

Screenshots and a save file would also be very useful as Socrates- said. It would help us see what is happening in your game better than any explanation, allowing us to help you more specifically.

Space/science victory tends to be a long and slow grind. Have you tried going for a quick domination victory?

Map size: Duel
Map type: pangea

Settle 2-3 cities, build some mines, then mass produce and rush with early units. Archers to pick off other units and lower city defence safely. Other units to capture cities.

Quite refreshing from a standard size game.

You don't need markets for trade routes in original game. Spam Commercial Hubs and boost your production and food with internal trade routes asap.

Thank you all for your comments. I started a new game with only 1 AI on settler level (500 move game) turned off faith & culture. After 181 moves I am slightly ahead on points 242 to 211. 13 cities to their 7. Great people 9 to their 21, wonders 0 to their 5, tech 50 to their 50. When I was choosing tech & civs I was trying to filter by science, I didn't see much difference, I am currently on monarchy.

Are you able to attach a save from your current game, so we could perhaps come with a few quick tips/easy fixes?
