Huge map and marathon play

Unless you're playing on a supercomputer I can't even imagine how long it'll take to resolve a turn late in the game on such a map. I'm not talking about how long you take, but how long the AI take to make their moves.

It is about 4+ minutes. It seems to me though the longest time is registering all the resources the human player has. If the AI did have all the units that some on here have allowed, then one could probably double that time frame.

If the AI used nukes and both types of bombers, that time would be lengthened further due to the fact that each animation takes a lot of time just by themselves. Since the last few patches, a lot of the AI "animation" is not shown, and that has reduced some time. They still show all of the nuke attacks though.

If one were playing with only a handful of cities, the in between turn time would be quite short.

As an American, I have to tell you that historically our style has always been more of the "murder/relocate them then say it was OK because they were savages/communists/terrorists anyway," variety. So you need to be doing a little more killing. :P How else are you going to get those logistics+range archers if you don't?

Relevant.

I play most of my games on marathon/huge maps and don't have a great computer. The turns don't take anywhere near 4 minutes even in modern era UNLESS everyone at war with everyone else and a lot of cities change hands.

I would recommend that you pick a civ that you like and has some type of building/happiness bonus. Build times are much longer, gold more important for purchasing - I try to "buy" all my settlers to avoid the non-growth time when you build them. You need to build happiness buildings as soon as they come up - wait and you could end up in trouble.

Scouting important. The territory a lot larger and you need to identify where your going to build your cities - which will be spaced out a lot more than normal. Look for good city locations, choose carefully.

I prefer the Aztecs due to the Jag warrior movement and healing bonus. No need to build scouts. And the floating gardens is a nice food boost. Honor tree lets me do a lot of barb hunting to help drive social policies. But Germany works well on marathon, as does several other civs (Songhai for one).

Military much more important. As is patience. Losing a unit is a BIG deal either on the attack or defense (its not that big a deal with Germany). They just take a long time to replace. So don't take chances, preserve your units, cities may need walls as they will be separated (depends on how close you are to hostiles).

And if you play with raging barbs on, you can truly see some massive barb rushes as they have a lot of territory to generate in - the only game I ever lost a city to barbs was in a marathon game with a city near tundra where a half a dozen barb camps spawn just out of sight and a massive horde came roaring down the river valley one day. That one was truly shocking if you want the truth as it was unexpected. (As a I said, scout).

Speaking as someone who built a fairly robust computer for 3D modelling (SIx core CPU, 8GB RAM, 1,5GB video card, SATA 3 HD's) I'm amazed at how slow Civ V runs on anything other than Normal maps - no matter which graphics settings I choose. The option to turn off unit animations would be most welcome as would the Civ IV options to not show friend and enemy automatic moves.
