I like to play games with huge maps and 15 adversaries. The biggest challenge is keeping the income positive when the empire gets pretty big. There's too much corruption in the out lying cities.

I usually go from despotism to Monarchy to Communism. Should I follow some other strategy to conquer a huge map?

Are you playing C3C or the older versions? Communism is pretty awful in PtW or vanilla.

I've not played huge maps, but from what I know about Civ3 I wouldn't bother trying to get productivity from cities away from your core(s). Either go Communist in C3C and use pop rushes to build units or workers or settlers to roll out your empire, or make them as food-rich as possible and run taxmen or scientists, depending on whether you want beakers or cash.

Build in ICS mode away from your core (i.e a very dense build pattern). Each city center delivers at least one gold piece even if totally corrupt, so you want lots of them.

I like Communism because I can get better production from cities moderately far from my capital (but not extremely far). I don't really like Republic or Democracy because they get war weary too easily. A big problem with Communism is you don't really get a great benefit from the Wall Street.
