Huge turn calculation times?

Somewhere around turn 300 the calculation time for turns starts getting huge. Usually around 10-35 seconds, and that's with quick combat, quick moving, and not showing moves. One game was lasting an absurd 2 minutes per turn. This wait really kills my desire to play out games past turn 300.

Is this normal for everyone? I play normal sized maps with 6-8 civs. My hardware runs modern 3D games just fine. Tried setting FFH2 process to high priority but it didn't help. Task manager says no other processes are eating up CPU.

2.11 GHz, 2 GB RAM
GeForce 8600 GT
 
Tends to happen to me a lot too. :(

In the past I've found that turning off "show enemy moves" and "show friendly moves" (unless you are at war) and changing the unit graphics so that they only single units speeds things up a little.
