Humankind Game by Amplitude

Yes the chance to start from the ground up with no obligation or expectation that certain things must be a certain way is very exciting. Is it confirmed that quarters behave like Endless Legends districts requiring to be connected to the city centre?

One of the previously-released Humankind 'screenshots' showed what looked like a Harbor-type District separate from the main city with no indication of any Districts linking them. Of course, that could have been some kind of Coastal Resource 'Extractor' or Improvement instead of a District: we just don't have enough released examples to say one way or the other.

wasn't there are quarter (or at least something that expanded the working radius) that wasn't connected to the city centre in the waterfall pic?

Yep, in the valley on the right.

The question is, is that a 'Quarter' or District-type construction or an 'Extractor" - one of the Endless Legend-style constructions for making a resource useable, the equivalent of Civ's Plantations, Mines or Pastures. Frankly, looking at the graphics, it might also be a Medieval Era Castle of some kind, which would be great - Civ has been mucking up Castles since Civ V, making them in-City buildings when in fact they were usually out in the countryside controlling and denying parts of it.

However, it does serve to remind that there are now from the revealed screenshots a couple of instances of 'detached' constructions within the same region as a city, so that Humankind's Region-based countryside may wind up being as busy as the Civ City-Radius when it comes to 'extra' things you can build in it.

Or Precinct, Borough, Prefecture, and all the furrin equivalents. And none of them are necessarily specific to a given state or culture: famously, central New Orleans is still "The French Quarter" while the common term throughout the USA (which, ironically, originated in New Orleans) was "Red Light District", but New York City is still structurally 'The Five Buroughs" composed of numerous smaller geographical locations like Harlem, Tribeca, Lower East Side, Greenwich Village, etc.
The five major areas that constitute New York City are individually called "borough."

Interestingly, the county equivalent in Alaska is also "borough."

In Toronto, the term "district" can be rather fluid.

I'm really liking this game's significant terrain elevation! Cities built on elevated plateaus, above high cliffs, and so on, will look so beautiful.

One of my complaints about Endless Legend was I had a very hard time seeing the elevation differences on the map. Looks much better in this game.

I have to admit, those screenshots look exceptionally lovely. :-) I have had my reservations about the regions system, but what I'm seeing makes me hopeful it's more subtle in this game. I look forward to learning more about it. I also appreciate that the map, while full of detail, does not look too visually busy or hard to read. In fact, it might just be the most appealing map I have ever seen in a strategy game.

I do wonder how far along it is...2020 is a vague release date. And when will we start seeing gameplay videos?

I don't know. It looks a bit too much zoomed in for my taste. Google Earth looks different. :) But I know, it's for gameplay and it will be good. It definitely is gorgeous.

Yeah, it's always like this with promotional screenshots. Zoomed in, and at a fairly low camera angle. :-)

I get that and it's okay. What I meant is that the cliffs are huge compared to real life and the buildings/cities below them. But of course, that's not really doable and also not wanted since gameplay needs trump that. But there is a break of realism for me here, two kind of map levels mashed together. But again, that is okay. It still looks gorgeous!

Honestly, mashing "different map levels" together has always been a problem for 4X games, in my opinion, as the strategic and global empire building level operates at a different scale than the battles between the individual units would.

Regarding the pic: Without knowing anything about mechanics, I'd settle down on the coast by the elevated forest. I like the small bay, it looks lovely!

man...those screenshots are jawdropping beautiful.

I use the picture below as one of my desktop wallpapers — and when I saw it again today, I immediately thought of Humankind!
