I could totally imagine Modern Era without expansionist ! Not especially because offensive imo, but it is really hard to find a good expansionist in the expected cultures, way harder than finding good candidates for militarist affinity.

Really? to me China screams expansionistic, It's flavoured around the CCP after all.

If the Canadians even get in I can see them being a "peaceful" expansionist culture too.And you'd be right, expansionist does fit the Sovier union as well, Im just looking at China, and I do think that expansionist would be a very constant trait to represent it (from Mao to Xi). However, they could also both be militaristic, or heck we might even see a scientific Soviet union, and a merchant China, who knows honestly.
