Workers have different models as per era. Should be possible for other units too.

Or you can just add a new late game sub - the ww2 sub would bot carry missiles by itself but could be upgraded to attack sub OR a missile carrier sub then.

As for model. A intermediate solution might be to stretch the stock sub longer. 1.2 or perhaps 1.3 times length (Only the lenght not all scales). You will not know until you try, but i think the texture stretching will be not a big deal here. Other than the length, they are quite similar.

The other thing that always bugged me about subs in the game is that the year is 2010, you've got ballistic missiles... and you are firing them from a WWII sub. Is there any way to get the art to update when you get a certain tech, like the one that lets you build the attack sub?
Yeah, you can do that, though I believe the modern era is the last tech that graphics change (which already includes the sub).

Most folks (self-included) just mod the game a little, take-away missile carrying from WWII subs, and add a "Boomer" type ballistic missile sub. I'm adding one to my Wolfshanze 2.0 mod, so you'll have a WWII sub (no missiles), a nuclear Boomer (carries missiles) and a nuclear attack sub.
 
Actually, the sub is first available in the Industrial era, and by simply adding a fake era after the Future Era (you don't even need to link techs to it) the graphics will switch on the the start of the Modern era instead of the Industrial era. So you can start with the classical sub and let it switch graphics in the Modern era (LateEraDefine tag or something).

Gameplay isn't changed, only the timing graphics can switch is.

Yeah, there's only three graphics ages by default, and the Sub is in the 3rd (I'm confident the sub is not listed in the medieval age graphics).

If you can add another age for graphics, who knows, but it's stupid to have WWII-era subs carrying missles anyways, so I'm in with the crowd who adds a dedicated nuclear boomer sub to the game (making 3-sub classes total... the WWII-era sub and two nuclear subs [attack and boomer]).

No matter how you may be able to handle it (if Geo Modder is correct), I still think it's silly to have WWII era subs able to carry missiles... you should have to at least upgrade the sub to a boomer or something.

Ah, but that's the shiny thing here Wolfshanze. Rocketry is a Modern era tech so the graphics of the WWII sub can potentially already be changed to a nuclear boomer graphics. Sure, its strength is still the same, and sure, a WWII sub can carry missiles too but those missiles simply aren't available yet before the graphic can be changed with my fake era system. ;)
 
This was one I wanted for a long time to make a good "super unit", excellent word :D

Yes GeoModder, I'm sure it can work in that fashion, and it's not a bad idea... certainly better then what Firaxis did.

I still prefer the "just add another unit" thing. The WWII sub is too slow and too weak... it should have seperate stats and needs from Nuclear subs, Boomer or Attack.

I just changed the WWII sub to have no-missiles (but it can carry explorers and spies), and made it "Oil-only" in resource needs... I then added the Boomer Nuclear sub and made both boomers and attack subs require TECH_FISSION and TECH_ROCKETRY with Uranium as the fuel of choice... oh, and the WWII sub can be upgraded to either boomers or attack subs. I still think this method just works the best, though certainly you can have the WWII sub play double-duty as a WWII sub and modern Nuke-sub, but I didn't think it should.

You could definately go either way though. :goodjob: :nuke:
