I thought they were figments of my imagination, I have built SAMs because they seem to keep enemy conventional bombers away, but today I went to bomb one of his cities, and while my conventional bomber flew over his city a missile came shooting up and shot me down!! Then I got the message, "we have just been shot down by an enemy SAM" I said to myself "COOL!!" I had to try it again and he shot ANOTHER one down!! I"ve been playing Civ III for almost every day for a year now and I have never seen this, has anyone else?

I thought I saw it all though, AI's nuking each other, AI helicopters with troops on board, AI paratroopers, etc I even once saw the AI redline a unit of mine then attack it with troops, it only happened once however and was probably an accident. But now I can say I've seen it all......

I believe it was 1.29f that fixed the SAM, so it would work.

I've had so many bombers shot down by SAM's it isn't funny! SAM's are a major headache. As soon as the computer acquires them, I know it's time to upgrade my bomber fleet to a stealth bomber fleet.

I investigated a city once, and I saw that they had a SAM in there. Only problem was I had modded the game so you couldn't build planes. Pretty useless item then, isn't it?

Even with stealth i still get shot down alot. I was attacking a city with 60 stealth bombers in my previous game. Every turn atleast 15 got shot down to intercepters and sams.

The secret to handling interceptors is to use a jet fighter to bomb the tiles near the city. The AI's fighters and jet fighters will intercept your jets... and get shot down much of the time.

Then, once his interceptors are either dead or have wasted their turn, you bomb his city with stealths. You might still lose a few to SAMS's, but not as many.

You'll also lose some jets, but better to lose a 100-shield jet than a 240-shield stealth bomber.

Yes I have seen SAMs. Interesting SAMS protect just the city center. It seems to be safe to attack a tile by the city as long as you don't target the city proper.

Oh well, wanted to keep those improvements anyway.

In that situation i switched production to regular bombers cause they have a/d ratings

Yup, this happened to me in the WW2 mod - my hurricanes and lancasters stood no hope against SAM's :(

Speaking of Jets and all, after a year and a half or so of playing Civ3 I just learned that Stealth Fighters are NOT a replacement for Jet Fighters, since the former does not have the Air Superiority action. Imagine that. All this time and I didn't know something like that. That makes the American UU much more effective than I thought.

Yup, and irl stealth fighters are classed as fast subsonic aircraft, clearly "fighter" is a misnomer. Should be "small bomber" instead :)

Thanks everyone, I learned quite a bit from this thread, especially Bismarks post. I have only used Jet fighters as a basis for protecting a city, I wondered if they were of any real use though but now I see a whole new reason for them :goodjob:

Well the flak and triple A over German cities was pretty fierce. Bomber fleets took a fair amount of damage IIRC.
