I can't get downloaded Maps to work (MAPS, not Mods)

Okay, so I wanted to use a couple of the custom Maps I've seen available for download. I put them into the 'Maps' folder, they show up in-game with the advanced setup options, I click the 'Load Scenario' button (and the game tooltips tell me that everything's going to be as promised), and then... I get an Ancient Era start with a Settler and a Warrior. Despite the map ostensibly starting in the Renaissance, Modern, or whenever. The tech tree is also sent back to the Ancient Era, regardless.

I'd like to say that this problem is exclusive to one Map, but it's happened with every single one I've tried. Clearly I'm doing something wrong here, but there's nothing intuitive about anything in this process.

If the solution requires doing anything to my files/privileges/etc., assume that you're explaining it to a complete idiot. I won't take it as an insult; most computer-related advice I find assumes that I understand anything at all about what I'm doing, which is a grave mistake.

Thanks in advance!

For the map to force a start at any age other than ancient its probably a Mod vs simply a map. Try putting it in the Mod folder. I know the set of maps with settings with it from "http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=397387" for example goes to the mod folder.

I don't mod, but I do have some maps I've downloaded and used. I placed them in:

~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Maps directory.

Launch the game, click Single Player, and select Set Up Game. Go to Advanced Setup and change the Map Type (top right) to the name of the map that you want to play. You can then click the Back button (if you don't want to change game settings on the Advanced Setup page) and you will see that the map type has changed to the map you have selected.
