I don't know. Creativity is not really my thing.

I think a discussion on the airships may be required at this juncture. The picture I've been building from Terrance's post quoted above is that the engines they run on are mysterious, powerful technology that is far beyond what the inhabitants of the world are capable of producing. The engines therefore would be the basis of the global economy and as such would be considered inviolate, even in times of war, and the airships would not carry much armour as they would only need to be defended from poorly aimed small arms fire.

I think you are mistaking Airships = Flying islands. I was saying that the engines supporting the flying islands are strange technology (or magitec, even).

And I think Airships with armor would make sense, especially if they ram each other as part of their boarding actions.

However, the idea of airships being rare could be interesting. Those wishing to discuss the status quo of Airships, please quote filli's post.

Ah. I suppose this would be in order. What I meant when I said "nobody understands them" was that we, players, do not have to know how they work at all, except that they do.

I pictured any size of airship, fishing sloop to Bismark sized, flying.

I suppose poorer backwaters might use balloons or propellers/traditional flight instead.

Examples of what I thought of (I had ideas in my head but artistic skills are sadly lacking):

this but flying

this but flying too

this sort of thing, maybe less bulbous though

this

this too

That sort of thing.

Anyway:

THE BOTTOM OF THE WORLD
A dense layer of dark clouds marking the lower limit of the skies. No one has descended through them and lived. What lies below.... Only the gods know that....

However, a daring recent expedition brought back samples of these clouds for chemical analysis and discovered interesting phenomenon. They appear to be rather acidic, and flammable. They are also fairly dense, and traces of unknown and unnamed elements can be found in them. Their density suggests that the atmosphere below may be of different elemental composition than the one of our islands.

THE TOWER OF THE GODS:
Aeons ago, perhaps more, some ancients built a tower. The tower. So high it penetrated into our heavens. This is the Tower of the Gods.

Though it is surrounded by a rather dense archipelago of islands extending about 30km out around it, besides these there are none within hundreds of kilometers.

The tower is extremely tall, so tall, in fact, that it extends through the Bottom of the World. It is circular in construction, and about a mile in diameter. The material of construction in a mysterious greenish soapstone found nowhere else in the sky.

Dominating the flat top of the structure is a massive statue of a monstrous creature, unknown in origin and with no related art styles found anywhere in the sky.

There are entrances to the interior of the tower - a maze of cavernous rooms and claustrophobic passages. Indeed, some parts of it are well mapped.

Others, however, are not. Countless intrepid explorers have been killed attempting to explore it.

The tower may be a possible way to penetrate the Bottom of the World.

THE SKAIAN LEAGUE
A civilization centered in the neighboring islands of Derse, Prospit, and Skaia. Led by the charismatic, ferocious, and utterly insane Lord English, they are famed for their battleships.

In times of peace, however, the Skaians are eager and talented merchants, journalists, PI's, and spies.

EDIT:
Just saw your post terrance. I was thinking the islands did not have engines, but were kept afloat as some quirk of this world or nature.

I must have misread the very first post then. I thought that the Islands are held up by the "engines", and the airships are just... airships.

Even if Airship engines are known and can work in universe, we should also talk how expensive they should be, especially with the talk of airyatchs (presumably for hunting Nuclear Skywhales?)

Hmm. I suppose airship engines should scale with size - you could have a small one for a pickup truck sized boat but a massive air battleship would obviously require quite a bit more engine to keep it afloat.

THE SCATTERED CONFEDERATION

The Scattered Confederation consists primarily of former island-colonies which have successfully achieved independence, as well as several island city-states which have nurtured the newly freed colonies. Currently the Confederation is governed by the Council of the Stars, with each island, no matter the size* or political affiliation*, offering a single delegate.

The Scattered League's fleet specializes in carriers sponsored by the city states, on which smaller airships and gyrocopters of lesser islands can be stationed.

The people of the Scattered Confederation are rugged individualists, and their fleet is almost all privately owned, on loan to the government in lieu of taxes. Although each individual member of the Scattered Confederation might wear their membership like a trophy, as a whole the Confederation presents a pragmatic and defensive view, seeking only to retain their independence from various "Continentals" as well as explore new technological venues, leading them to form a partnership with The Utopia.

Several important city states are Yanos, Serek, and Halopis. Several important post-colonial islands are Pratzden, Volago, and Keets.

THE STATE THREATENS WAR AGAINST THE UTOPIA, THE UTOPIAN COUNCIL PLEADS NONAGGRESSIVE INTENT IN THE "KISS MY ASS" INCIDENT

Although the State is considered by all other polities as a pariah in international politics, the fact remains that their brutal efficiency and ravenous appetite for raw material makes them an indispensable trade partner-often unofficially. It so happens that one such exchange, which supposedly "Never Happens", was taking place several kilos from a Utopian testing station and hidden behind several clouds. A beam of unidentified ability but undeniably power struck the Statist craft, causing it to blow.

The State sent a representative to the Utopia, demanding to know why the Utopians were blasting "Peaceful and non-intrusive Statist ships" outside of official Utopian airspace. The supposed and widely popularized response was "Kiss my ass".

OOC: Let's see if we can be mature enough to not let such a small, regional war get out of hand. ^.^

OOC: Wait, did we decide that airships were almost never destroyed and destroying one was a Big Deal or not?

OOC: Honestly I am very much against the idea that air ships or sky ships or whatever would be nigh indestructible. I think it detracts from the sort of dystopian nightmare-world of constant warfare and genocide that was sort of-kind-of being assembled, which is what I find (so far) to be the most unique and interesting thing about the setting other than the Great Inventor deities.

OOC: Yes.

Here is what I think is currently going on. This can certainly be verified, contested, and discussed.

1) The Islands/Continents are afloat via some natural/magical process. They can sift their position slowly over the years.

2) There are two kinds of Airships. Relics "Rustys" and Retooled "Clunkers", and Manufactured "Shinies".

3) Relics are ancient ships which are kept mostly unchanged. The largest ships are Relics powered by dozens of engines. These are invariably covered with rust no captain dares to attempt to clean: besides, no one has ever heard of a Relic failing due to rust on it's hull, and everyone has heard of the "Gargantuan" which was made sparkling new, and then disappeared between Serek and Prospit.

4) Sometimes, Relics are found in disrepair, got damaged, or engines are found randomly and reconstructed carefully. These are less capable than Relics but often use more modern and standardized equipment and often sport a "patchwork" look.

5) Technology has recently reached the period where new airship engines could be built. However, these are still quite expensive and of lesser quality than either Relics or Clunkers. They are also very inefficient compared to the old ones, and quite volatile. These are generally built with new chrome coverings, as simply using pure metal causes it to quickly rust away into nothing.

6) For all airships, they are very high investments and almost always one of a kind. Although tradition demands that airships are sacred, the new "Shinies" are shifting the balance of power away from the "Old Guard" jealously protecting their fleets towards newer, industrialized powers like The State.

7)Time will tell how the Shinies will affect culture perception as well, but we should still consider that currently, ranged assault on other airships is unmanly and even pitiable. Whether the State is tied by such superstition, believes that boarding actions are the most efficient, or is using entirely new doctrine is up for grabs. Whatever the case, they know enough of the superstitions to use it to their advantage.

EDIT: They aren't indestructable, they are by common consent generally not damaged, leading bloody boarding actions between docked airships, as well as hilarious responses to airship bombing raids. As the story goes on (i.e. not immediately >.>) cultural perceptions certainly will change.

Also, Gyrocopters are probably seen as un-respectable. Hot Air balloons would probably also be seen as weak and acceptable targets. As for how the Airships themselves work... er... rule of cool? :3

What about conventional aircraft (in our sense of the world) and small-scale commercial ships (i.e. sky fishermen?)

Fishermen would use hot air balloon-esque craft with handpropelled/powered engines I guess.

As for more conventional aerocraft, possibly? Maybe thy are less developed with all the focus towards the newer shinies airships.

OOC: Ok, cool.

I thought that shinies, at least, would be fairly easily replaced.

OC: Lord English condemns the fateful message. Given the somewhat close proximity of the incident, Battle Group Red Commander Vantas and his troops are placed on high alert status.

The Iron Duke, sensing warfighting, directs his mining fleet towards the action.

THE IRON FLEET
Most of the iron fleet is composed of scrappily made shinies, though, for the most part, they are built to a set of standard patterns. The fleet takes no shame in using large cannons, as being a mercenary, nearly outlaw faction they have little honor to lose. Even so, they do not necessarily shy away from boarding, but instead of docking prefer to launch lightning raids on small "skiffs" (shinies capable of mounting a 20mm cannon and carrying about two dozen soldiers, used as general purpose craft, with many being assigned to each larger vessel).
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the fleet is its "homeships". These gargantuan vessels are made of many Relics and Clunkers attached together, allowing large facilities and flying cities to be constructed. Dozens, even hundreds of smaller shinies use them as berths, and the homeships mount perhaps the largest weaponry known to man.

In the towering steel spires of Megafactory 2 (formerly the sky-island of Providence), Commissioner for the Advancement of Society Malcolm Terwen observes the Fleet of the State mobilise on the towers around him. Hundreds of thousands of grey-clad workers scurry around the shining, chrome clad airships, fresh from the manufactories of the Megafactory and many more labour around the six behemothic Rusties given pride of place in the centre of the arrangement, tethered to the more prominent and larger towers.

Banners depicting the Grey and Black flag of the State flutter around him, as do those depicting the face of Phillip Lude and the raised fist that is the symbol of the hardline Ludists. As the sun rises behind him, Malcolm looks over at the assembled fleet. Lude damn him, but the resource cost of the Shinies had been high. It may pay itself back, if Utopia was incorporated into the State. It would be down to the Commandants, and the Commissioners for the Military to win the war.

And they would. History was on their side. Efficiency and unity will prevail. This would be the first step, to brining all under the enlightening fold of Lude. Whether they wish it or not.

Terwen raised the voice-caster to his mouth, and spoke only one sentence, which rang out across Megafactory 1, amplified by speakers and casters across all of the State:
"Go forth, and conquer."

Two philosphers chatted over tea.

"Well Hendricks, that was a mite unpleasant" spoke one with a monocle.

Hendricks sipped and said "True that. A spot of setback in our plans."

"At least we know the Weapon works." The monocled an chuckled "Even if we take down five ships before overrun, we can send the prototypes to the Scattered League, and they will be obligated to liberate us."

Hendricks sighed "Gerald, Gerald, Gerald... it isn't that simple."

"Oh?"

"First off, the ion blast was uncontrolled." Gerald's monocle popped off "The testing facility was entirely destroyed and all the workers killed. It was only a miracle the mirror deflected the dissipated beam..." Hendricks picked up Gerald's monocle and handed it back before he continued "I don't believe the ionic program can be brought online fast enough for the defense of the Utopia."

"Damnit" swore Gerald under his breath. "That might prove to be quite an issue."

"Indeed" *sip*

The two robbed philosophers sat in thought as their servants brought more tea and the fire was turned a mite higher. Glazed eyes, slack jaws, and unconscious munching ensued until...

"Hendricks my friend? I think I have the solution to this problem."

"Oh?"

"We ship a device into the heart of the Statist fleet docked at their capital. We activate it. And we hope the ion blast will kill every last airship docked there. And if all comes to worst, it will self destruct."

silence.

"Gerald."

"Yes?"

"Bloody brilliant. Let's go to the Utopian Council at this moment! And oh, one last thing." Hendricks leaned over to Gerald's ear, "Remind me to never play Diplomacy with you, you blood bastard."

The two philosophers laughed uproariously. As in they chuckled under their breath with a smug look on their face as they walked towards the Utopian Council

OOC: The Ion "Cannon" device thing is powered by whatever. Energizing radioactive materials? Anyway, it is very crude, unstable, and doesn't work, but they hope that it's side effects may prove useful in other ways. They will take many batteries/generators to power to critical saturation, so either they do it before they leave, or try to sneak a Relic or a couple of Shinies and Clunkers into the heart of the Statist fleet.]

EDITOOC: Please don't feel intimidated. Submissions of all sizes and postcount will be considered. :)

EDITEDIT: Also GrandKhan, this is not meant to be negative, but you are focusing a lot on The State. That's good! We got lots of detail about their place in the world and how they view the rest of the world. Just make sure it doesn't cross over into epicsuccessallnat20wank like several nations I won't mention in the last one. :) That would be good with me.

I would like to set the date to be the year 3552, the third day of the third month. Why is the year 3552? What is the third month called? I'll leave that up to you guys. :)

BTW, putting date labels in your posts from now on if it "advances the plot" would be very helpful in putting things in order, as well as for retroactively inserting information.

EDITEDIT: Since we are going dieselpunk to the hilt, here is a link to TVtropes. Click with discretion.

OOC: What I am seeing this to be is somewhere halfway between "Diesel Deco" and "Diesel Wierd War".

6/3/3552 - airship Berenos
Ki, chief engineer of the Berenos, leaned back in his chair at the end of his shift. Being chief engineer of a relic airship was one of the easiest jobs in the merchant navy seeing as problems were so rare. He poured himself a whiskey and watched the vibration of the engine create ripples in the surface for a second before knocking it back and picking up his book.
He was halfway down the first page when he looked up, realising something was wrong. He glanced around his cabin but couldn't see anything. Shrugging he poured a second whiskey. Then the realisation hit him. The surface of the liquid was smooth. Listening he realised he could not hear the background him he had grown so used to. The ship wasn't vibrating. The engine had stopped. WHAT THE DEPTHS IS GOING ON?

Captain Rendell was immediately aware that the engine had stopped.
'Mr Jex,' he called to the helmsman, 'do you have any control?'
'Sorry, sir?' responded Jex, not having noticed.
'The engine has stopped, helmsman, do you have any ability to manoeuvre this vessel.'
'What!' Jex exclaimed, before busying himself with helm, 'yes, sir. I have minimal manoeuvring ability.'
'There's that at least' breathed Rendell, 'someone get Ki on the horn and find out what's going in down there.'
'Sir,' exclaimed lookout Beven, handing Rendell a spy glass, 'thirty degrees to starboard.'

Rendell took the proffered instrument and looked along the indicated bearing. It took him a while to realise what he was looking for, but when he saw it he could not believe he missed it. An island rising out of the clouds. New islands occasionally appeared but it was incredibly rare for the event to be observed.
'Add this to the charts and report the rising to the admiralty,' he ordered no one in particular whilst his eye remained glued to the glass. The the clouds cleared somewhat and his jaw dropped.
Looming out of the mists was the unmistakeable silhouette of a city. As the details became clearer his eyes almost popped out of his sockets. He recognised the architecture although it was like no city he'd ever visited. He had seen it six cabins behind him and four decks below.
'Inform the admiralty we have discovered Kanen, the lost city of the Inventors,' he breathed.

Note: Any airship using a relic engine loses power in the vicinity of Kanen and will be slowly pushed away from the city. Contemporary airships are unaffected but will come under attack from powerful weapons if they stray to close.

Ooc: assuming that's the sixth day if the third month?.

IC: Captain Godwin was a pirate. Or rather, he likes to think himself a pirate. He and his gang of swashbuckling gyrocopter raiders are pirates. They had just went AWOL from the Scattered Confederation fleet aboard his assigned skiff and they have yet claimed their first victim.

This day, however. They felt lucky. Putting away their red and blur flag of piracy temporarily, they approach the berenos.
