I hate patch 1.74

So.... yesterday, I tried to play Civ 4 online with my wife for the pirst time and was promptly told I needed to update. Not one to usually shy away from these things, I agreed. It began the download and tried to install the patch. I got most of the way through it, then this happened:

I When I next went to play Civ again, I recieved this:


I scoured the forums here last night and today, and found a way to uninstall the game and reinstall so I could at least play Civ. Against my better judgement I tried to patch again, thinking maybe it was an issue caused by my virus protection software (which I tried turning off this time). Same thing happened. Can someone tell me what's wrong with patch 1.74 and why so many people seem to have issues with it?
Oh, and if anyone has any thoughts on how to get the patch to install properly, that would be great too.

Can I suggest you re-install Civ 4 into its own folder e.g. c:\games\civ4 if using vista or win 7

What version of the game do you have? Is it a disc version or a download version? If it is a download version you must get the patch from the same place you downloaded it, the standard patches for disc versions (or the in-game update) will not work for downloaded versions.

I have the Game of the year disc version.

Have you tried applying 1.61 first? That can sometimes help. If you have Vista or Win 7 apply them by right clicking on the .exe and use run as administrator.
I do however have vague memories of people reporting odd things with patching GOTY edition.

Ignore it. If you find it really annoying you can turn it off in the .ini file.

I do not find any .ini files. I do find a shortcut to 'config.'

In that file the 1st line offers an option to "hide min spec warnings."

Lower down there is also "voice over IP capture and playback."

Do I change the first, the second, or both?
