I think there are more than one type of gamer who would consider themselves core. I've played every Civ from the beginning. I'm thrilled that the junk has been removed and the game returned closer to the feel of Civ (ie. CIV 1). Frankly, I've had less fun with each new version, except maybe IV, until I realized how much busy-work it took to play one game and didn't feel like playing anymore.

I have been betrayed to the demons of "accessibility" and "marketability" that are the coin phrases and staples of any modern game developer.

Funny, because I'll go back and play old games like MOO/MOO2/Imperialism II/Tropico just to get away from all the nonsense features "core gamers" have demanded over the years.

None of this means I don't want better AI, but that's another issue.
