I shall CIV no more forever...

I started with CIV 1 back in 1991. Indeed, Civilization was 'the' reason that I sold my old black and white Mac SE and bought my first PC.

While I have enjoyed the last 15 years of nearly non-stop CIVing enourmously, I have decided that the time has come to retire from the virtual life, leave my room, and go see there have been any patches released for that reality thing I used to play before CIV.

As it's the only way I can think of to avoid spending the next 15 years playing 'just one more turn' of this insidious addiction, I have decided to quit cold turkey.

Thus, to paraphrase the Native American leaderhead chief Joseph, "I shall CIV no more forever."

Good luck with the withdrawal symptoms. You can't come back here either. This site is what dragged me back in.

Well my last game was June 8th 2004.. and i'm still posting on this site. :) If i totally cut it out i just have a massive binge game at some point and relapse.. i can't deny civ exists!!

A life without Civ is no life at all. Of course, I am happily married to a cutie...so I really should not say that.

Your story breaks my heart. I'm gonna go cry now. :(

On a lighter note. Everyone, Join the Demogame.

Mine was 23 December 2004. I got GTA:San Andreas for xmas, and have been playing that almost non-stop!

I really need to get a RnR game in, tho.

I really slacked off the game before April of 2004 when I found this site. I found the site and was really excited about it and I got my second (or third) wind.

Luckily my wife plays Civ with me on the network so I can still actually play once and a while. :)

This is a difficult issue.
If I had dedicated to real life the time, energy and passion I invested in Civ, during the last 12 years, I'd probably be rich and famous by now. And I would have had more than a few GFs, too.
On the other hand, I cherish every minute I have spent on the game. I obviously had a more gratifying life than most people, even though many people wouldn't understand what is gratifying about it.

Because you're doing something you enjoy, as opposed to doing something and lamenting about what you don't have.

I understand perfectly. ;)

Lucky dog!!! Mine accepts my addiction and I try to only civ for an hour every day :twitch: . Any more than that I could experience Riots on the home front.

What I normally do is play hard for a month or so and then leave it completely. I play with a new game, such as RTW, or sports or whatever. After a long while I come back and start playing alot again.

I believe the key to successfully being a civaddict is to alternate the gameplay with other social activities.

When you come back after months or weeks it just feels great. Anyhow If you're neglecting your real life friends, family or girlfriend just turn off your computer, throw the CD rom of Civ away or even better, break it, and don't come lurking arounf CFC or Poly because you'll fall back again. I saw a program the other day where this american kid had committed suicide shooting himself in frony of his PC with the game that had him addicted then; after being hooked to all kind of computer games, specially one called Neverwinter something for the last year/s ??. He had flunked hugh school, lost his friends, and never came out of his room. His mother, a computer programmer herself, filed a lawsuit. It's not the game itself that is bad, no matter how addictive it is, it's the use you make out of it which might become harmful upon yourself.

The key is to measure carefully your "civ dose" and spread it out in time.

My two euro cents.

I wish you luck. I'm hopelessly addicted.

Can't you just click on your wife and turn her into an entertainer?

My wife doesn't undestand the addiction at all. I think she has come to view my computer as a competitor.

I've tried to show her my empires. She jsut says, "All I see is a bunch of colors on the screen. You're a loon!" I'm working on my 16 month old. Maybe I can convince her of my greatness :king:

Playing civ, first thing on a saturday while smoking herbs and listening to the radio is my happy place.
