On my latest computer, Win11, I was having trouble playing some of the latest games, laptop, so I wanted to return to my old favorite, ToT. Of course it has no CD drive and my last pc got peed on, so before I found the old installation with ToTPP on a harddrive i acquired it again. Of course when I got the Time Scenario, 1.1, and ToTPP installed it would crash. First thing I did was disable the city sprites like last time, but it crashed again. It worked just fine on my Win10. After a day I saw what it was doing on start, the DirectShow videos were all black and then it would crash so I disabled them in the ToTPP settings file under video. That worked for a year, until recently I started a bad save, got conquered by barbs early and decided to retire to see my score, lo and behold it crashed.

Now I know while it skips intro and event scenes very well, skipping the retire video makes it so you don't get to the the scoregraph and add to hall of fame, which I loved. So I found this .avi codec and installed: https://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm , lo and behold the videos loaded, and I could retire in peace. Bonus I can watch all the fun videos, and if I ever want to go crazy I can try making a avi video for the scenario I wanna make, I want it to be utilizing most of ToTPP's features, tho I'll see if I want to do old events or lua as there might be some security concerns with that. The trouble with these forums I find is that google these days does link to it, but I have trouble with not seeing enough info on the links before I have to browse dozens of pages to find if someone else had the problem, so I'm reporting the fix here.

The end.

PS: other fixes include, running in administrator, making sure civ2 runs in compatibility mode in properties for XP service pack 3, ToTPP in compatibilty for Win7. Good luck!
PPS: If your codec download doesnt fix it, a value of 1 on the video disable in ToTPP configuration settings (
DisableEventMovies=1
DisableIntroMovies=1
) turns it off and allows you to proceed, or you can just turn off DirectShow video in the ToTPP settings and then click a bunch of times to sometimes get to the main screen, but then the videos will play at other times and you may or may not be able to proceed.
