I still play at chieftain!!!!

What is meant by axe rushing? And how do stacks really work?
1: Build Axemen.
2: ...
3: Profit!

Basically, it means you build about 8-10 axemen (or swordsmen, if you have iron) and attack your closest neighbor.

It takes so long to build that many and 5-6 may die in the rush from fortified arrows. What about stacks against city defenses? Why do spearmen/pikemen not get matched up against mounted units? That is why I built them.

The unit with the best defense against the attacking unit will automatically defend. Although I havent played in a long time I think there were differences with defending seige units or it could have been some mod.

If a mounted units attacked your stack then your spearmen/pikemen would be the top defender and will automatically defend. If there it no better defender then a mounted unit then your spearmen/pikemen will attack it. However as archers are good city defenders it is likely that you will have to defest a number of units before being able to attack mounted units with a spearmen/pikemen unit.

Have fun...:D

Your spearmen and pikemen don't attack mounted units because usually, the defender has a unit that defends better. In order to make use of the 100% vs mounted units ability of these two units, you must damage the other defenders badly enough that the mounted unit is picked to defend. However, you can also fortify your spears to protect your other attacking units from a mounted counterattack.

To get lots of axemen quickly, you'll want to think of ways to crank them out more quickly. For example using the slavery civic, you can sacrifice population (commonly known as pop rush or whipping) to finish anything currently being produced. Just bear in mind that lots of whipping makes your citizens really unhappy, at least the ones that are still alive ;)

You can also chop forests to speed production.

Finally, consider building a Barracks in your city before you try an Axeman rush. This will guarantee that your Axemen will have at least one promotion when they're finished. Obvious choice here is City Raider, to counter the defensive bonus archers get for being in a city. You're going to lose a few of them but teh ones which do survive will be useful for taking another city once they've healed up.

The chopping trees, and pop rushing using slavery are the keys to the "axe rush" also note axemen become available with the same tech that allows chopping and whipping. So the axerush is pretty much known as THE early rush move. Basicaly the steps are:

1) Build worker, while beelining Bronze working
2) pop rush (or whip as it's commonly known) that worker
3) pop rush/ chop rush second worker/barracks (deciding which is up to debate)
4) chop rush/whip (but you're going to want to use that whip sparingly, try to use forest chopping as much as possible) 6-10 axes
5) Attack closest neighbor as soon as possible

It will actually surprise you how many players on multi player games wol't be ready for this, in fact in multi you can frequently take out your closest neighbor with 3-4 axes, which takes almost no time if you beeline BW and have a good amount of forests.

My game generally starts out in the following manner.

Tech: Hunting > Mining > Masonry > Mysticism > Polytheism > Priesthood > bronze working

I shoot for Stonehenge and the Great Wall followed by the Oracle.

Meanwhile, I build a barracks first > Scout > worker > and so on..

Civ: Americas, Lincoln

Where is the wheel? You need roads to connect those resources!

Hunting? Why? Are there deer around? That would probably the only reason I would research hunting, or if I need archers because of a lack of bronze or horses around.

I would skip the mysticism and that branch unless I started with Mysticism.

Just commenting. :)

Wheel is free on Chieftain level. ;) You get Agriculture, too.

Sounds like someone has Wonder Addiction. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but chasing wonders and axe-rushing are mutually exclusive. If you want to take over your neighbor quickly, you should focus on the axerush and NOTHING else.

Yes, this means you'll miss most of the early wonders...it's a tradeoff.

What?!?!! and have no religion?? i usually rush for polytheism then rush for bronze and axe my neighbour (or sword him).
i think a religion is an absolute necessity for balancing your budget, spying on other civs and for the civic bonuses.
i forego all early wonders except oracle (for a bit of a lead) and the +50% GP birthrate (forgot it's name darnit)
i never build great wall cause i love barbs (free promotions for my units!!)

Actually, AriochIV, my questions have been answered. I appreaciate all the replies.

I did not ask "How do you play?" It's more like you can't read or understand english. There might be a grade school in your neighborhood that will still take you. It's never too late to improve your education. :D

This could also be part of the problem. Your first build should be a Worker, Work Boat or [sometimes] a Scout. Building a Barracks first slows your growth tremendously.

Check out this post: What do you build first?

AriochIV is correct, though, in that this thread belongs in Civ4 - Strategy & Tips.

That is a fair statement. However, I treat Civ IV, Civ IV: Warlords, and Civ IV: Beyond the Sword as separate games. Each has it's own set of rules that come into play. Therefore, Any question regarding Civ IV: Beyond the Sword belongs here. After all, didn't the Statue of Zeus reward change? Didn't it use to give you crusaders every 5th turn?

I still get crusaders every 5th turn from it, but only if I am AGG and play as the celts.. On the plus side, it builds twice as fast with irrigation, so its always easy to get since I like to farm-rush my most distant neighbour before plastics

Uh Statue of Zeus did that in Civ3. But the axe-rush hasn't really changed since vanilla.
