Recently, and for no apparent reason, I decided to try a standard map. I hate taking forever to finish a game so it was a dumb idea to even try this.

Well I did it; hoping for a space victory even though I also hate going through the nuclear age. i ended up with a domination victory but it was a Pyrrhic victory at best.

It was so unutterably boring for two of the three days I played that I now have a distaste for Civ at all. I have tried to start several games at small or tiny and I'm just discontented with the start or the neighbours or whatever. maybe a Civ III hiatus might be a good idea for a while.

I will say that I liked starting with the Hittites on a pangaea setting even though I got more maps than anything. I got very few techs from huts in this game which did seem odd.

I am thinking that it might help me to go back to some of the "Legendary Games ". I need some inspiration.

What have others done to get past the Civ blahs?

Read a book (series), play a different kind of game, play a game on a different system (IE, a console) ... basically, just take some time off (a week or so, more if needed).

Darski - By all means, take a break. I love this game and have been playing it for eight years now, but not continuously.

One of the things I do to keep it fresh, is I alternate between my mod, and Rise and Rule. A couple of games of each, and I start longing for the other mod. So find a mod that's different enough from your regular game and give it a shot. You'll find it almost makes Civ3 a different game. :)

Thanks guys. I have been reading a couple of the legendary games and they do inspire one. I'll see what kind of game might appeal.

I've never done the "Mods" as they seem to work in portions I'm not interested in trying. Might take a look at a couple though.

Try playing PBEM with real humans, they give you quite a change from the stupid AI... :)

I also like some of the Mods & Scenarios. They force you to learn different rules and new features. There are so many, there should be something for every taste. Age of Imperialism is of course a classic...

Sometimes I get tired of it after a while... then I stop playing or play CivIV, and after a week or so, I'm having a CivIII craving.

Yeah... I do agree. Most A.I. don't try to aggressively extort one of your best cities [pimp]

I am not a good player at all at all. Playing another human would just not be something I could do. You know all those things they say about the dumb AI - well they can take me out on anything more than my modded warlord.

I have gotten back to playing. I am trying to teach myself to conduct trans-continental warfare. uh huh! Actually... winning is doable it is the starting of war that stops me.

Yeah, how else would most humans be able to win against a whole pack of AI civs most of the time?
