I Want Civ 3

I want Civ3. Civ2 is cool and all, but all my friends have it. I would get it but i don't have money. Can you play the game w/o the CD like Civ2?

You realise that this is the equivalent of going into a mosque and saying "Well lads, your religion is all right but Judaism is so much better"! Not a smart move at all.
Stick with Civ 2 - forget the fancy graphics and just consider that at this point in time it's simply a better game. Besides, if you lust after good graphics then just wait a bit for the next instalment of Favoured Flight's LotR scenario! - it looks incredible!

Hmmm Duke o'york i disagree.I have both games.
I played civ2 for 2-3 years and i can call myself veteran and i had it also on psx.Civ2 is good but the time to wait between turns....horrible.
And civ3 HAS good ideas:"colonies,icbms,smarter a.i,a more balanced game and all the new resouces...."
I stick to civ3 and when i have a new copy of civ2 for pc i gonna play sometimes civ2.

I believe Civ3 is a better game and it got a lot of good critics, but it gets boring after two weeks. Civ 2, though, I've been playing for at least four years and is still my favorite game . If you buy Civ3, make sure your computer's fast enough.

Instability seems to be an issue for Civ 3 on many people's systems, too. If Civ 3 cannot be rigged to play without a CD, then that is a huge problem for some people (including me). I assume Civ 3 can (or has been) cracked for No-CD. Even if it means copying some large files to the Hard Drive.

Let me phrase it this way: I have about 40 computer games for the PC (I haven't used my Mac for a few years now, so let's not add those in to this discussion); I have yet to even try 30 of those games, including SMAC. When civ 3 gets to the discount price level, I'll buy it & place it next to SMAC & the others and maybe, just maybe, I'll try it some day.

Very well said there Smash! For me civ 3 was never fun, too much graphics and tooooooooo slow, why animated moves!? It's as important as animating the moves in chess! Well, time to start civ4 I think,

I don't see much of a wait between turns on my PC -- 30 seconds, max.

If you want to see a wait between turns, try a late game three space ship invasion in STAR GENERAL -- I've seen 25 minutes while the slow AI ponders every hex, shows the viewer every hex considered & then repeats the process for the next 179 units. This is a great game to play while looking for interuptions from the other facets of life.

Smash & Chofritz, I totally agree. But I think it may be more 'politically correct' to say...
Civ3 is different ... also Call to Power is different.

I think someone could make money selling us all a tweaked Civ2, with little fixes and improvements in the AI.

If you want my copy of Civ 3, you can have it -- just e-mail me. I played one frustrating month of Civ 3 and then left the CD under my living room end-table collecting dust while I played Empire Earth. Then I found a way to go back to Civ 2 (had problems on my newer computer) and that's it.

The companies behind the production of these two games, Civ2 and Civ3. The difference is telling. Microprose NEVER put out a game that I disliked. Those games always worked and were enjoyable. They sent me patch disks for free when I called to ask for them.

Fir-crap-sis, on the other hand, has NEVER put out a game that, once purchased by me, EVER worked correctly. Bottom line; fir-crap-sis is a fly-by-night, shoddy, unprofessional outfit, run by incompetents and borderline criminals who seem to delight in releasing unfinished and unworkable products, then stoutly refusing to do anything to assist the unwary customer (perhaps "victim" would be more appropriate here) in trying to "fix" the useless garbage that they've sold him. I own several of their "products" and NONE have ever worked correctly. NOT ONE. Others tell me that they've had better experience.

Dumb luck.

Just to echo some of the other comments here, I have played a couple of games of Civ3 after years of playing Civ2. What a disappointment! There are so many problems with Civ3 that it probably (to echo OldnSlow) be no more than a diversionary game in the arsenal on my computer.

Civ3, in my estimation, is sort of like CTP -- you play it a few times just for the experience. Then you go back to the real deal!

We, the loyal Civ2 players, hereby acknowledge our undying love of the best computer game made to date and pledge to continue these forums until such time as Civ4 is put out by MicroProse!

Bring back hit points and firepower! Multiple "dice rolls" (Civ3) cannot and will not ever be superior to single "dice rolls" (Civ1)! Superior graphics do not make up for a lack of playability! Bring back engineers and land transformations! Railroads do not create more food! Democratic cities do not suffer from high levels of corruption!

I think I can call myself a loyal Civ2 player, having played all GOTMs since I joined CFC.
But I´m also loyal to Civ3.

My opinion is that the average Civ3 game (i.e. Regent or lower) is fun for a few times but the replayability of Civ2 games is not reached.

BUT for higher levels (i.e. Emperor, Deity) games of Civ3 I had more fun playing than ANY Civ2 game ever. The improvements on the AI, whether cheating and unfair or not, really bring back the heartbeat and the tense moments one wants in a game from time to time. Playing and barely winning those high-level games cannot be compared with any Civ2 challenge (except MP). Some scenarios, self-made and downloaded, come close, but I expect a similar difference for Civ3 scenarios. As a normal game Civ3 Deity vs Civ2 Deity, the Civ3 one wins by far. That may be because all the winning strategies are fully exploited for Civ2, but the AI is still too dumb to pose a real threat.

I know that many of you don´t like to hear this, but Civ3 is a WORTHY successor to Civ2. It is of course NOT the same game with a few improvements, it´s quite different in many aspects, but that is part of the fun.

I really hate waiting on a machine to do anything, esp. play a game. I'm not even going to "try" civ 3 until I have changed machines , as my current machine is slow enough already.

Well put, Chofritz. Can Civ 3 turn all that animated stuff off? I remember well the chess game called "battle chess", which was interesting at first, just to watch (esp. considering the graphics of the era). But I turn off all slow & fluffy stuff that I can in all games, even First Person Shooters.... in the interest of increasing speed and reducing distracting crapola. I know some people like eveything animated, and that's fine, but whether it's Civ2, Risk2, Chess, TFC, or a HUD in a real military aircraft.... keep it simple, and keep the distractions out (I'm a functional type, ).

Nothing wrong with saying that . Almost very decent game has it's good point and bad points.

BTW, Lucky, Congrats on your Civ 3 GOTM. You're probably the most well rounded strat gamer I've noticed. You play Civ 1,2,3, plus I've seen you posting about Starcraft, Caeser III, and playing chess. So tell the truth.... how long, in hours that is, does it take to play a top Civ 3 GOTM? I've wondered, but I've never palyed Civ 3 yet.

Holy cow! All that goes on in Civ III? Interesting (aargh). Well, the "perfect" game has still not been created. I wonder if Sid will actually consider doing a true Civ 2 follow-on. If I still lived in Jersey, I'd drive down and talk to him about it. I know about the funding and publisher issues, but it would sell better than some of krapola that typically gets released in the Oct-Nov time frame each year to fleece unwary people of their $$$ and euros.
