I want HISTORY kept in Civ4:

The most reliable way to have a historical record of events that YOU think are important in the game is to ...
Jot them down YOURSELF, even on a piece of paper if you have to. You get the info that is relevant (and entertaining) to YOU!

Remember that most of the events that occur in the early game will be going on without the players knowledge. If we had such a record we would be able see when, for example, philosophy was discovered or why and how the Aztecs decided to wipe out the Iroquois.

It's actually a very good idea. I hope the game can be modded to allow it.

We are not cavemen!!! Do not make us scratch pictures on the walls of our caves to record history!!!

It is the year 2005, there is no need for paper!

this is one of the best idea that someone has come up with on cfc, it would make it far easier to write stories too, for the forums as you wouldn't constantly be jotting down stuff

Good Idea. :)

Most of the info about who went to war with whom and when is already available in the replay when your retire on civ2/3. It should be just a matter of making it available in current games.

There is only one caveat, an 'IN GAME' history should only include those civs you have current contact with. (using a real world example the Aztecs in 1400 can't suddenly say, "The Spanish have discovered Navigation, and they have Gunpowder! we must prepare to defend our cities before they find and invade us... we might have some time though, they are at war with the Arabs")

Once the game is over you should have access to all the History though even that which you hadn't obtained by the end of the game in Normal terms.

honestly, I can't think of a reason for them not to put this in. I really hope they do put this in.

I'd like this feature to be in. Whasn't it in civ2 (at least for units)?

Yeah, Civ II had a version of this feature. While it was far from perfect, it was a nice tool. I was surprised when Civ III failed to provide this information.

It would be cool, especially if it was customizable. The game provides a list of things it can keep track of each turn, and you can select all those you want have recorded in the History Log.

I think it would also be nice if they included an IN-GAME photo tool, so we can take pictures of the maps and other things, and have it automatically dumped to a jpeg in a folder.

The photo tool is a nice addition, but the history-log definitely should be in! I think the post-game-show at the end of the games is far to restriced, fast and small... I played 40 hours on a game so I will take my time to view how the world evolved...
And if you don't like it, turn it off! Perfect! Brilliant idea! :goodjob:

Concerning the write it down yourself, Jaybe:
I don't like to do boring things like keeping stats every turn, but I like to see what happened during the game and after the game.

You should only be able to see historic events of the other civs when having an embassy with them and knowing the part of the map things are happening... (also, history will be enlarged when you discover new parts of the map or open new embassies, but that's clear, isn't it?!?) In short: Great idea!

I'd like to have an (extra-)log as well, where you can keep track of your own timeline and development to a far greater detail... I'm playing COTM's now and I'm not used to keep (I mean to write down) track of my moves like I have to now... There is no such thing for Civ3 and I'd like to have it for cIV making it easier to follow other players moves! (Or did I miss a useful utility-prg. in the download section?)

I agree completely with the OP. I want history to be kept and to play a factor beyond influencing how AIs feel about you. For example a city that has been attacked eight times in the past decade should experience more war weariness than a city that is sitting comfortably in the middle of your empire and not threatened at all.

Civ I had history, it would be cool to see it in civ IV.

CIv I recorded first discoveries, foundings of cities, destruction of cities, and building of first units.

For the life of me I've never understood why that wasn't included in the other versions. :(
