I want my money back!

@Ranos - I guess this is pretty off-topic, but I'm not aware of piracy being more of a problem in Europe than the USA. Are you? In any case, if it's that easy to copy Civ IV, refusing a refund won't help much, because I and my friends can buy one copy between us and then copy it. I assume from the fact that people are constantly on the look-out for no-cd cracks that copying isn't this easy, however.

I got a set of bad discs today from Amazon. No new Civ for me I guess:(
Good news is that Amazon is awesome like always about returning defective crap!:D
Maybe I'll try to find a DVD copy of it...

ofcourse you can get your money back for a disk that you can't install. just return it to the shop where you bought it. They are obliged to sell you a working product. You certainly don't get your money back by complaining on forums

I guess the bad discs are still out there. I have never had a problem installing anything before, but just picked up a copy of Civ4 at Best Buy today, have already exchanged once and still get the catastrophic failure on disc 2. I have tried on three different computers and none of them can install. To make matters worse, the Best Buy closest to my home is out of stock, so now I have to drive further to keep exchanging. What is real sad is that the bad discs are most likely caused by the copy protection which purposely puts bad information on the disc to prevent copying, but any 12 year old knows where to download games and how to get around the protection.

I guess tomorrow I will take one of my laptops to Best Buy and go through the dozen or so copies they have left and hopefully either find one that works of get them to accept giving me a refund.

Yes the cd disk i got for civ4 seemed ultra sensitive. My primary cd rom drive could not read the disk. This drive has never failed to read any disks until civ4
Anyway my brand new LG drive did manage to read the disk after some struggle. Then the game was difficult to install after that.
I think the whole problem stems from the fact that Microsoft want to make it hard to crack their programs. But in doing so, they have sacrificed reliability to the point where ligitimate customers like you and me are suffering
I had that problem and the disk seemed to have a scratch on it so I replaced the disk at store, but I still had the problem. Then I read on some FAQ that updating the drive's firmware could help so I googled my way to newest firmware for my oldish LG drive, which wasn't so easy as it sounds. The files were well hidden in the depths of internet. Anyways, updating did help and now it works like a charm. Saved me from bying a new DVD drive. That copy protection is paranoid and it isn't stopping the pirates.

Amongst all the other garbage that the tech support sent me they recommend updating your DVD/CD drive firmware and admit that the copy protection causes trouble. The problem is they sent a broken link to a site to check to see if your firmware is new enough! Since I tried several computers and the newest is only six months old I find it hard to believe, but will give it a try before exchanging more.

I love the fact that tech support also says not to use a drive that is also a burner since the copy protection causes troubles with them. They also say to remove all burning software. Huh? How many computers that meet the hardware specs have a drive that isn’t a burner? Can you even buy a drive that doesn’t burn now, and do they really expect me to remove Nero just to install a game? If so then sorry, I don’t need the game.

It is real sad that copy protection is doing little more than frustrating honest buyers of games. Maybe next time I want a game from this publisher I will skip the step where I go to the store and pay and just download it since that works better.

Heh, mine is the European single DVD version. It works fine now that I updated the drive.

I updated my firmware to the latest version and tried a third copy on five different machines with no luck. Fortunately Best Buy was friendly and exchanged for a different title.

My guess is that the DVD has much better quality control. I am tempted to see if I can find someplace that has it, but I really don’t want to give the developer my money now.

At least this pushed me to get the latest firmware updates for all my machines.

@Rendell

I bought CIV4 a couple of weeks back. It didn't install. Spend 1 hour downloading the pirated version (since that took less time than returning it). Works fine. Go figure...

Maybe you should try the same?
