Has anyone been looking at icon creation? From briefly looking at screenshot, looks like unit flags are similar. Unit icons appear to be unit pictures with no background, resources seem more cartoony and simple... likely needing versions for explored and not in view versions. Have not viewed others closely such as leader or civ icons.

For units It feels like the "Unit Flag" is the main icon in most areas used like in production and the city banners, which I personally prefer over showing a stylised image of the unit like Civ 5 Did. Looks much cleaner albiet it removes a bit more uniqueness to Unique Units if this is the case.

Shows the Leader and Civ Icons at this point in developement. They're much more symplistic over their Civ 5 counterparts but are much more unified in terms of leader icons. Civ 5's leader icons while looked good a lot of them were done in different styles.

Looks like the leaderheads are just renders of the 3d leaderheads. Simple if you have a model, but most civs will be using 2d leaders initially, I suspect.

The civ icons haven't changed much at all... larger, I think, with different shading. In this case, I can use my old Civ 5 icons with a little tweaking.

Thanks for the images.

I wonder if the civ icons change if you mod the color in the code, or if they're static images.

Gee, I hope not. I was really annoying in V, especially when they did do that for some screens in BNW, but not all of them.

The areas where it did actually change colours was implemented really poorly. I hope they can refine it and make it possibly but I truely doubt it'll be there.

I'm just hoping the way Icons work in Civ 6 is more practical than Civ 5's, So many files required to give a civ a Civ Icon, Civ Alpha, Leader Icon, 2 Unique Icons, Unit Flag Alphas. Then there is any additional imagery. So many different size of atlas' needed to do it.

I didn't mod much Civ 4 but I don't remember needing multiple sizes for everything, If it's like that again than it becomes much simpler to do things.

Would any Gimp masters have suggestions upon how to make Civ 6~like icons.

Looking at the icons on display, they seem fairly simple. No glow or anything... a simple band of shadow runs horizontally across the middle of the icon. I cannot tell if the band thins in the middle or not. The icon itself seems simple and seems to be the top layer.

My thinking is that I simply spray paint black from the right and left sides of the icon in a radius of about 1/2 icon width. There may or may not be a white shading at the top and bottom as well... i would similarly spray top and bottom and place that layer over the black layer. Then I would adjust with transparencies.

That being said, is there something I could do with gradients that I am missing? I do not know that aspect of gimp well.

Looks like I can definetely repurpose the icons themselves, barring any unforseen weirdness.

If the Civ6 devs are smart and truly want to help us mod, they'll make it so all we need to do is make the icon and the icon background will be made and coloured for us. Just have a single circle background with shading that changes colours, like units change colours.

It appears that there are two sets of icons for technologies, researched and not-yet researched. This will be an extra step in modding the tech tree.

I find the new icons boring to look at actually. Civ 5 icons are much more attractive and exciting. I may replace the new icons with better images found on the web.

All of the icons in Civ 5 are round (buildings, techs, improvements, units) which make modding easier. Civ 6 really mixes things up with round, pentagon, hexagon and square icons... ugh. This could be challenging for someone like me who isn't really great with the art.

Yup! :goodjob: i have little faith that they will do this though.

Hey! I think they did actually do it! Considering that the icon is tied to the civ, but the color is tied to the leader.
