I think it would be pretty cool if colonies could splinter off and become a seperate civ.

If you have colonies on a seperate continent, and the people in the cities over in the colony areas were unhappy, with loads of corruption, they should just form a new civ. (with a few other cities in that area simultaneously)

It adds to the challenge, it can really knock it out! :viking:

Culture Flipping? YUK, indeed.

If attacking and capturing an enemy CAPITAL meant anything (as it did in Civ 2) this might have some validity, a colony splintering off. . . and in this case joing a rebel faction in the civil war. Remember civil wars in Civ 2? There, going after the capital was a meaningful goal; no more.

Was the in Civ2 Gold or only classic? I remember it happening but when I tried to recreate it I never could get it to go.

It happened in civ2 (original release at least) only very rarely because
a) the civ in question had to be democracy
b) it would only occur if "conditions were right" - i.e. if one or more civs had already been eliminated and there was still unsettled land.

More likely the government would simply "escape" to a nearby city.

The other day I had an idea for a radically different game - where "civs" were based not on government but culture groups, and certain advances like monotheism and nationalism would cause splintering of culture groups into more civs. So at end of ancient era you might see Roman empire split into two with "disocvery" of monotheism...

Gave up on the idea because it sounded too much like history class and less like a fun game you could win.
;)

What could be playable is to have cultural groups consisting of several nations right from the start. When a culture splits up, your nation has to choose one subgroup to belong to in the future.
Other advances (pop music, mcdonalds ;)) could merge cultural groups or create new ones.

I wish this kind of thing was implemented as well. It would make a situation as the American Revolution and the Civil War possible and numerous other revolutions that have happened all throughout history. I think it is pretty stupid when your city revolts to another civ, it makes sense if that city belonged to the civ before but to just change sides is very stupid in my opinion but I do like some of the culture features and Civ3 is at the beginning of the right track.
