New to civ6 so any help would b appreciated. So the strategy i have planned is...

-build a fair few cities from the start in needed locations like around mountains rivers and production tiles. Work each city on food so i can get enough population for decent early production rate. More worry about population growth when i can tackle amenities later on.

Get a builder asap and improve 3 tiles to boost the craftsmanship civic. This allows you to slot the 50% military production card for ancient units, and make a ton of slingers/warriors to defend yourself and settle a 2nd city. Experts usually build a settler really fast after the builder but feel free to build a big enough army so you feel safe.

If an enemy is nearby, you can upgrade your slingers to archers and invade. Keep in mind you need a melee unit such as a warrior to conquer cities. Don't go too crazy with archers; they cost maintenance and it costs a lot until you get the card that reduces maintenance at state workforce. You also want a monument a bit later so your culture grows.

Once you get that going, continue to spam settlers, workers, troops and builders as needed and slot the 50% settler or builder card. Once you've got a bunch of cities, your oldest cities can start working at campuses while your other cities keep doing what they're doing. You eventually want campuses eveywhere, and chop trees to keep them faster.

You really want the political philosophy civic which lets you pick governments. I usually go for autocracy as it gives a bit of gold and science while letting my caputal build crap, especially be on the look out to build collsseum which will help with amenities.

And yea production is the main thing I worry about. Food and housing aren't that important due to amenities

Yes, that's a good basic strategy. I find that housing usually caps my population faster than amenities - but each game can vary.

Beware early barbarian encampments. It is highly recommended to build 2 or 3 early slingers (and then upgrade them to archers) to help keep yourself safe from barbarian attacks. Also, in the early game, remember that many builder actions cannot be performed until you have the technology to use them. Make sure that you research the technologies to utilize the resources at hand.

Also, boosting technologies and civics by meeting their specific triggers is a very powerful tool in the game.

Depending on your play style, a lot of people highly recommend an early war to take out your closest Civ neighbor or city states. The extra land, and population resources gained can be extremely worthwhile. Others, like myself, often take a more "builder" approach to the game - but this is seen as less optimized or efficient. In general, Civ 6 rewards warfare more than it punishes it.
