Have an idea for some of the more popular wonders and buildings. Instead of unlocking them once a certain tech is researched, have them unlock once you reach a certain age. Say the Great Library opens once you reach Classical and Notre Dame once you reach Medievil. That way you can go along the tech route you want without having to go the same route for the first part of the game. You could follow the bottom of the tech tree if you are going for dom victory or middle if you are going for diplo. Have one or two of the oft overused wonders that open at a certain age. You can still have the rest of the wonders that are more directed toward the victory condition you are going for open at certain techs.

Civ should be about compromising, not just getting whatever you want regardless of the choices you pursue.

not saying get whatever you want. The Great Library, Notre Dame, Petra, etc. Wonders like these are arguably great choices no matter what vc you are going for. And getting to Classical doesn't guarantee you are going to get the Great Library. Have two wonders open per age. That way you would have to choose which you want to go for. Just a thought.

Hmm. Era change is primarily about depth of overall knowledge. Note that as the eras change, the techs for the new era are more complex (requires more beakers to complete). Most Wonders, however, seem to be more linked to specific skills and the ways of thinking that are represented by a given tech. Ergo, I see Wonders being more derivative from techs than from general era change.

Things like philosophies and ideologies are generally more pervasive than just single techs. They are more about how we think and how we interpret what we see all around us. Those I can see being linked to era changes, because as Society evolves, its way of thinking becomes more sophisticated.

Honestly I can't say I think this is a good idea.

This would just shift the meta toward tech beelining the fastest medieval tech every game (Theology?) and would give players yet another advantage over the AI.

On top of that it doesn't make sense in terms of historical accuracy. How are you gonna make the Pyramids without masonry for instance?
