If the units talk to you...

Yes some comic relief would be nice. That "revolution" thing in CivIII has been talked about a little too often. Its likely the only relief in the entire game, and it gets old pretty fast. More comic relief and Easter Eggs, please. :)

Isn't there something that Hannibal says, like "Contrary to my enemy's propoganda, I am not a canibal" :D

those things are funny...but yes..civ can become rather stressfull..a few more things(not getting carried away of course) would be cool. just to make you gigle from time to time...and with the amount of units...its likely they wont be worn out as fast as the diplomacy screen or advisors little tid bits

Hell, I'd do a voice-over gig on a game for free. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I'm sure it can be toggled off considering the sound options civ3 had... :) but I won't toggle it off, it'll probably be fun for the first games (like reading the answers of the foreign leaders is in civ3...).

mfG mitsho

I'd certainly derive much enjoyment and a large case of the giggles if they did something like this. I LOVED what the humans said in Starcraft (Firebat: Can I interest you in any propane? Or propane type accessories?)

However, I agree with other folks that I would much prefer other features in the game (more civs, more leaders, etc.) first. Also, they'd have to be careful what lines they gave to the UUs. Much of what is funny runs the risk of being offensive to that particular group.

if the comments were like those in starcraft..that would be great..and not very offenisive..but youre right..i have not thought of the unique units...maybe just keep it generalized. or basic (my personal favorite of the starcraft series is the medic in brood wars."just tell me where it hurts." lol classic.)

What's wrong with offensive? As long as "offensive" is clearly in good fun or beeped out (like the Vultures' cussing at you).

However, it is vitally important for Civ IV to have a rating of "E", so there will be no swearing.

I wasn't so much thinking of swearing(which I'm fine with) so much as culturally offensive subject matter:

Examples:
Musketeer: Zees enemy is too difficult! Why was I not given two movement points, zo I could run away!
Samurai: Me so sowry!
Impi: Where all da white women at? (/blazing saddles reference)

Okay, so I made those spectacularly offensive, and Firaxis would never make gaffes that big. But, it's quite possible that they might accidentally choose something less obvious, if they're not careful. I'm sure they could come up with something funny that isn't culturally offensive quite easily, just so long as they think ahead stay away from hurtful cultural stereotypes.

Examples:
Musketeer: Get Dumas on the phone! This wasn't in my contract!
Samurai: I swear, if I have to hear Tom Cruise jaber on about scientology ONE more time between takes...
Impi: Maybe we could tie the coconut on with a string... (/monty python reference)

I think that i would get annoyed with the sounds eventually. But yeah, if they're added, then i wouldn't mind so much. So long as i have the option to turn them off anyway.

How will the unit sounds be encoded? If it is still in the old .wav format - anyone with a microphone could make their own unit 'greeting' - whereas in the past we weren't likely to do it for unit sounds like melee attacking, riding, artilley fire etc.

Post them up on a the Civ 4 creation forum, we can match them with any new units created. It couldn't hurt so long as people give their permission. And if someone makes a culturally offensive or just plain stupid unit sound then it just doesn't get used.

What does everyone think?

Some funny things are hidden away in CivIII.

Have you ever tried to play C3C on the 8th of January (just change your windows clock) ? Look out for your king units, they'll be "somewhat" changed and they'll answer when clicked upon with an unmistakable voice ... :p

BTW if the units really start talking to you and/or you start talking to them, you are in need of serious counseling. :crazyeye:

Yep, quite right, you might end up being a sickman.

if the system was implement like starcraft..that would be great...but if your worried about offensive..then why not something simpler...the age of empires style..the units talk in native tounges...its still kinda cool..and it would keep you occupied...it would also be less expensive to devolope..(changing the languages of all the units depending on market..) this way it would be across the board..and the 18 civs would be easy to do

When they were going to start selling CivIII the official website rolled out introductions to the playable civs. Down came the Persians and the preview of the Immortals had the words, "There can only be one".

:D I love that and I was looking forward to so much more of these things in the game... but I didn't see any. Elvis units and that revolution thing just didn't do much for me.

Perhaps they should speak with the correct accent.

Well, on that note:

Camel Archer: "Stop spitting, you stupid animal!"
Privateer: "Fifteen men on a dead man's chest/ Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum"
Galleons, Frigates, etc. "Where's me grog? How am I supposed to get the riggings straight without a pint!"
Cavalry: "YEEEHAW!!!" "What does that mean?" "I don't know. Something I picked up somewhere."

Fighters should be cocky. I don't know what they should say exactly, but make it cocky.

I'm not so much worried about offensiveness of the generic units. A warrior is a warrior is a warrior... no one can really get mad (and yeah, they should be cocky). More, the UUs I see as a potential pitfall. Perhaps native tongue for them and funny stuff for everyone else.

Yeah, and the tanks would respond, "Oh, no, a pointy stick!" :D

will they say funny things if you keep clicking on them? (ala Starcraft and Warcraft)
.

That gets very annoying. I have turned off sound in starcraft in order to avoid hearing them.
