My interpretation is that the results of the poll about having something like a "clubhouse" or "Neighborhood Pub" or "Local Coffeehouse" are kind of mixed an inconclusive.

Here is the link to the original poll

Don't interpret this thread as meaning that we should absolutely do this, but the intent here is to open the discussion in a fresh way and to brain storm ideas for a "name" and a "boiler plate".

You can post as many ideas as you come up with and you can be extreme and inventive.

The name must be less that 30 to 40 characters but the boiler plate/tag line can be a longer phrase that sets the tone for the place.

If we get enough ideas, I will build a poll with all the serious suggestions and then let every one make choices and add comments.

The "Gamer of the Month Club"

No cards, no commitment, just off topic chatter

Lame, but I had to put SOMETHING down :)

The Embassy Gardens Tavern - A place where rulers from every walk of life and every country can gather to discuss the meaning of life and dawning of each new civilization.

And any other idea one may have on how to wage war :hammer:, preach peace and diplomacy :jesus:, or reach for the stars :borg:.

Pull up a chair just to listen or offer your $.02, 2 euros, or pounds.

How about one of these ?

Over the Rainbow
You found it !!

Alfa Centauri
Relax. The wars are behind you, and your score won't be recorded here.

2051
A civ'ers Oddyssee.
(spelling ?)

and last but not least...

Crackee's Creek
...

Well... I was thinking, if trainers have trainees, then cracker...

"The Player's Rest"

"The Statistician and Nitpicker's Arms"

"Quick Start Quaffing"

"Quack Start Chill Zone"

All pretty naff. Sorry.

Edit: Après Civ

For those of us who saw the Civ I and Civ II "loser" cinematic all too often:
The "I Told You I'd Return" club.

For those who have listened to too much Pink Floyd:
The Fletcher Memorial Home (for Incurable Tyrants and Kings)

Coffee, Tea, and Milk.

No, really: Coffee- players who sprint fast to the end on an adrenaline high, tea- players who take a while for their game to percolate before finishing it, milk- players who carefully wait for the milk to finish pasteurizing before drinking.

I can think of other labels for people who don't quite fit in these categories, but these three tend to cover most people playing the GOTM, I think.

Of course, individual beverage choice would have to be allowed inside, including orangesoda. ;)

Cracker's Barrell?

whb, one can NEVER have too much Pink Floyd!

If "Several species of smal furry animals gathered together in a cave and grooving with a Pict" weren't too long, and if Col was the moderator and if he could translate whatever it is Roger Waters is saying at the end of that song...<g>

But a couple of more appropriate names might be "Possible Pasts" since the board will be full of 'coulda, shoulda, woulda's.

Or my favorite both as the board name and the song: "Echoes."

But that's just 'My 2 cents' (not a Pink Floyd song, just another suggestion, echoed from what hotrod0823 mentioned) and this from a guy who saw the orginal thread and figured he'd never participate in it at all!

The Cow Level - Sounds appropriate, since I'm playing D2 now.

The 6th Victory - After you've done all 5....

City 257 - Number is Max+1, like the 19th hole in golf

2051 : A Civ Odyssey - mentioned above, I know
Great Wonder of Babble - mentioned above, I know
The Leaders Lounge - mentioned above, I know

Boast Toast Roast Coast - a title somewhat descriptive of the contents

The Advisors Forum - remember the civ2 advisor cutscenes?

All Your Citizens Are Belonging To Us - running out of ideas

Jack this Thread! - like that book...

The tag line is more difficult, since we haven't really fleshed out the purpose of the thread. If the purpose is to talk about topics tangent to the GOTM, then the tag line has to be something a bit vague.

A place for gratuitous boast, toast, or roast.

Cracker's Palace!;)

I like "The Senate". Some of the others are funny though. I can only think of the obvious and corny Planetary Party Lounge, and another which is rude (but I just can't get it out of my head).

Boring and neutral would be something like "the officers mess", change it to Crackers Mess and you get a ban...;)

The "tag line" is sort of an important part of the process here because it can help to set to behavioural tone and purpose of the place.

You can look at the forum index pages to see when forums and subforums have a name and then the tag line or subtitle is used just below that name to clarify what goes on in the subforum.

But they are all a bit straight laced IMO, and I'm rubbish at being funny. So I assume you mean something like...

The Docking Bar
Blow the froth off a couple with other GOTM addicts

Mad-Bax,

You are right on track. The name and the tagline produce sort of a balancing process that makes the thing seem complete. The name can by sort of dry, but with a good tag-line it can produce the right frame of mind for the participants.

Some names could be fairly obtuse, such as:

Davey Jones's Social Club
"for people who like to monkey around with the Civ3 and send suicide galleys to the deeps"

Guinan's or "The GOTM Holodeck"
"Synthehol, Socialization, Strategy: Aliens welcome!"

Taken together the two pieces of the naming process can help to set some better expectations of what you may be looking for and how you would hope otehr players might use "the place" if we did set it up.
