I would start a profitable organisation to help develop third world countries.
The idea of founding companies that will really contribute to economy and thus prosperity sounds truely thrilling to me!

Micro-financing like the Grameen Bank is the way to go.

I would be a scientist...
Hey wait, I am a scientist :D

If I could pick any other job it would be professional musician. Not rock star but either jazz or classical.

How did scientist not make the list?

What is the Grameen Bank?

Most financing or loans are out of reach of the poorest people in third world countries because they have no collateral. Traditional banks would happily lend $100,000 to a corporation but wouldnt lend $100 to a poor family so they could start a small business. Giving the lowest rung of the economic ladder access to seed money for small businesses is the surest way to increase economic activity in economically deppresed regions. Heres a link:

Lawyer, Dictator (not neccesary evil) of a small island in Micronesia or something, CEO of a big company and an artist.

But I'm so lazy that i voted the last thing...

(don't forget a "radioactive monkey" option the next time)

If I could find a cause worth fighting for that actually had a chance of winning, I'd be a soldier. Otherwise I'd be a singer (well, I am a singer. but my "band" doesn't make money at this point so it's not exactly a job).

Researcher.

I was technically one for about a year, but I hope to return to it in another discipline (none of that bio crud for me any more!).

That is indeed a good way to start! Traditional banks are very conservative.
BTW: there is another way of reaching this goal. Many poor / undeveloped countries lack a decent administration system. This causes the impossibility of using real estate or other valuable stuff for collateral. I believe a economy sectretary in Peru was quite succesful by initiating a decent administartion system. Later this idea was copied in Egypt....iirc.....

There are few higher callings than giving people jobs that help them improve their situation. Oh, the evils of Capitalism.

No mr Drewcifer, there are NOT! IMHO, this way of thinking (by all kinds of different organisations) is exactly what blocks undeveloped countries from developing.

All higher callings, like healthcare, food, education, housing, clothing and even peace, cannot exist without being profitable (or at least breaking even).

Don't get me wrong. I do not think free market can solve all problems. Plenty of things should be controlled and covered by government, thus tax money.
But that doesn't take away my point: All has to be profitable. In the long run, a government cannot spend more money than it generates from its own economy.

In the past years, billions of develoment dollars have been thrown away to hundreds of unfeasable, inefficient and non-profitable programs. In the end there is no use in sending food and medicin; in general, people should be self sufficient. Help them create their own profitable food and medicin industry! Even building houses or teaching kids can be relatively useless. It is better to start a profitable housebuilding company, than to build a few houses yourself. It is better to start a profitable confection factory, than to hand out our worn-off clothes. It is also better to teach teachers, than to teach students.
In case of unforseen disasters, it is ok to send non-structural help of course!

I think you misundertood that I was agreeing with you in a sarcastic way. People (especially in OT) sometimes like to criticize capitalism like it was the devil. This despite the fact that it has pulled more people out of poverty than any other system or ideology (eg. East Asia since World War II). My first sentence was honest, the second was sarcastic.;) Giving jobs to the poor and helping them rise above their poverty is one of the most noble things a person can do.

Sorry Drewcifer!

It is not the first time I misunderstand the irony in a post! I guess it is hard to tell, without hearing someone voice....
