Why should it offend Chinese? Opium is a resource found in many other countries and even today it's Afghanistan's major export (along with other illegal raw materials).

I like the general idea of illicit resources. They could be a double-edged knife, giving bonuses under certain civics and circumstances while causing negative effects under others. They could also be a prime reason for diplomatic crises and wars as well.

Opium should stay in, it's historically important. Any Chinese person not willing to have part of their history represented (good, bad or ugly) can take a long flying leap and can go play something like Harry Potter because Civilization is obviously far too intense for them... history is by and large a dirty and unpleasant thing as it involves human beings, and the whole point of this mod is to reflect a small part of that.

Secondly, if hemp is going to cause -1 food, it ought to cause increased unhealthiness what with all the new fat people rolling about.

That would not make me upset at all. But you are right, there will be some Americans that will not be happy, and you know what? I don't care, because they are being unreasonable. IT HAPPENED! It's the same with religion, you may not agree with it, but it's here. It's a part of our world, our culture. And it's been here for a very long time. It's humanity. There will be people all over the world that won't be happy about anything you can concieve. This is the real problem in our world today. Our history is plagued with ugliness. I don't understand people's problem today with it, or anything else that is ugly. Everyone is so sensitive about everything and anything. With the brave new world of political correctness, soon you won't be able to say the word "it" without offending someone. It's not the world or our history that has the isssues, it's the people, and they need to stop this crap.

I have an idea, how to create black market
It has to put to work, similar as religion. For example drug dealer has the same ability like misionary. If you send him to your or other city, then black market start working, you get +1 gold if you have "holy city" what is maffias mansion, he gets -1 gold and unrest or other thing. Spread rate should chosen wisely cause you might be affected to...

You can make it as civic to. When you have certain ressources opium etc, then you may build opium trader or dealer, acts as great merchant or missionary . When it is civic or religion then other who don't have this kind of order they don't like you

i see your point, but we should avoid the unecessary.
im sure it will be fun to create a game and play as taliban to crash planes into WTC towers. yet its part of history now, it happened, its part of our world, its humanity.

in australia, people are offending the native people when they call them "Aboriginal", but its respecting them if they call them "aboriginess". alot people doesnt care, while alot people learned to respect them, and avoid calling them "aboriginals".
this is a perfect example of avoiding the unecessaries.

These resources could hamper the recievers economy a bit too, at least in democracy/universal suffrage, through the responsibility to take care of the mess it produces and the counteractions to avoid it.

Perhaps the costpenalty could be reduced if you legalize it, but with higher production/health penalty, and even turned to profit in a stateproperty government, like Systembolaget (statemonopolized liquersalesment(?)) here in Sweden.

edit: of course opium should be in with the rest of the drugs, but in the end I don't think it's necessary to include all narcotics by themselves...

I don't find Opium offensive at all.. though I suppose there are some that have the thinner skin than myself.. I think the whole idea could be very intriguing, to be honest.. as a matter of fact, when I play with an English friend I have, he often quotes to me one of his favorite songs
