Combined Arms: Don't just build catapults, stack 'em with Axemen and Spearmen on the attack, stack Axemen and Archers on defense. Later on, remember to upgrade your outdated units (if they have enough promotions -- my rule of thumb is to build new units and disband anything with less than 5 exp).
Upgrading takes cash so remember the earlier comments about building your economy. Read up on the "cottage economy" to get started in that direction.
I won't say forget about the wonders, but pick and choose your favorites. I usually only build one of Pyramids, Oracle, Parthenon in the early game and overall only a couple of wonders in each era until I have the production capacity to build both military and culture.
