what would be good for that? USA? Rome? Rome,Babylon,Greece,Shoshone,Portugal,Poland,
Ethiopia

in my thread everyone said these but everyone saying something different doesn't help me pick 1

i want a normal game a CIV which doesn't boost you or downgrade you and is overall good all the way through

i want a diplomatic win

Honestly, just go with whatever Civ you think sounds best/funnest.

Good beginner Civs in my opinion include Poland, Sweden, Egypt, and Arabia.

Greece is definetly one of the best for Diplo wins.

If you wanna win by diplo, try Greece and remember to pick Patronage. However, in general, scientific civs are better for any victory condition as a beginner, as you'll be better than the AI in everything.

Poland, Babylon, Ethiopia, Egypt have a Unique Ability good for beginners. Don't try to play anything too complicated like Venice or Spain.

USA, Rome, the Shoshone, and Portugal are all a little advanced, gamey, or bad for beginners, in my opinion. Babylon, Greece, especially Poland, and Ethiopia are all fantastic civs for beginners, though.

Babylon's UA is great at the beginning and the rest of the game, and will be even better for when you learn a bit more about the game. Greece's UA tends to come into its own in the Industrial Era and later, but is still strong during the rest of the game. Poland's is consistent and powerful. Ethiopia is best if you focus on religion and growing, as opposed to expanding.

i want a diplomatic win

Probably Greece, in that case. Overall, though, just play around with any civ that seems simple, and have fun :)

so i should focus on science and patronage to get a diplo?

i like the idea of having a strong religion and growing but can you win effectively with that

i normally like to have 1/2/3 cities pimped out that's it

which policies should i go for

Russia in any version. Extra land from kreposts and +1 prod from your absurd amount of strategics is very forgiving for newbs.
France pre-BNW as well, I was never good at culture when I started.

I could see the Shoshones and Poland being new player friendly as well, albeit more for the UA than the uniques.

Poland is always good to learn the game. Since you have free policies to toy with, or make mistakes, just try new things. Even if you will not use Hussars the stables itself are nice to have.

For diplo victory Greece would be most obvious pick. However since diplo victory is a lot like financial victory civs with great market works just as good, so Marocco, Arabia, Portugal. Who said you cant buy the friendship?

America is great for learning because Washington's uniques don't interact with anything. He makes you a little better at the things everyone does but you can tinker with the mechanics of the game without having your perception of them be tainted by the kind of bonuses other civs get.

Shoshone gives you a real decent advantage early. It allows you to make mistakes whilst you are learning. I'd say it's the most newbie friendly.

Tradition, patronage, and rationalism are good. In ideologies, Freedom is probably the best choice.

For a beginner going Diplo, yes. Tradition is very easy to take advantage of, and gives you lots of free things, very good when paired with freedom.

However, once you get bored of tradition opener every game, try toying around with Liberty. All of my Immortal wins are with Liberty opener thus far, and I've won with all 3 ideologies.

I used Poland for my first BNW. Its UA is a no-brainer to use, and its UU comes late enough that even a newbie should be ready to start a war by then.

The most important thing to consider is which civ will help you survive the easiest. Your first few games must be enjoyable more than anything so that you can learn the mechanics and timing better.

Alex is always a good choice.

Once you have played one or two games with Alex, I recommend you play a game as Ethiopia. This is so that you will have a religious civ and can learn the religious mechanics (faith production, religious spreading, beliefs etc.) And, if you should be able to survive easier because of their UA.

You can always build a religion with Alex, but it might be too much your first game.

EDIT: And don't you even think about automating your workers!

so i should focus on science and patronage to get a diplo?

Commerce and patronage are the main ones you'll want for a diplo victory. Rationalism (science) is also useful.

For a civ, I'll echo what others have said with Poland, Egypt and Greece. Inca, Maya and Ethiopia are also pretty good, if a little more specialised.
