I finally got Civ 3 on my new laptop! I haven't played in almost 3 years.

Are there any maps that people would recommend playing? I don't know my way around this forum, so sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Welcome to the forums! :band:

I'd vote for a continents map. I like high sea level so you don't have to manage as many cities. Plus, after you clear your continent and meet the others, you can cruise to victory, usually.

Panagea can be fun, too. It turns into a giant free-for-all. Remember not to trust anybody and don't open your borders! Open borders can be used with Civs on another continent.

Are we talking about Civ4? They have Open Borders or do you mean blocking access?.

The scenarios are made by players and post here. You can use them as Complete has all three version, including Conquest.

Sorry, I got confused in my terms. I meant Right of Passage. I don't like giving Right of Passage in most situations in CivIII. Right of Passage in CivIII corresponds to Open Borders in CivIV, generally.

Side Note: Right of Passage is usually a poor idea in CivIII, and usually a good idea in CivIV.

I found to to be not for me in 3 or 4. I preferred to not have them in my land.

Well, played a little bit, and it seems like the AI won't attack you if you have a ROP agreement.

No they cannot attack you if you have an RoP and are in their land, nor can nthey kick you out.

I've been attacked by an AI that I had a RoP with, once in my entire experience.

Not without them declaring war. Possibly the deal had expired.

I think they do it occasionally. I vividly remember one occasion in a Demigod/Deity game: I was very weak compared to another civ, I had an undefended town next to a resource, and they had just moved a couple of units next to that town.

I knew, they would sneak-attack me next turn, the signs on the wall were quite obvious. So I tried several things to prevent them from sneak-attacking (I later reloaded the .sav several times in order to investigate this closer):
  • signed a RoP with them
  • renewed the peace deal, so it would last another 20 turns
  • gifted them a luxury
  • gifted them a decent amount of gpt
  • gifted cash
None of them helped. In all cases they sneak-attacked (in some cases even trashing their rep).

I was a very weak America next to a very powerful Aztec Empire at the time, and it was very much still in force. If I remember rightly, they even did it when I went back a turn and got an MPP with them too.

Then you've been quite lucky. I often run Representation and don't put units in every internal city. Some screwy AI with half your power will move in and take the city with a warrior. It's nutty, because it has no way to hold the city and has just gone to war wtih a stronger Civ. I had it happen a few times before I started closing my borders.

Even with units in my internal cities, I've had the situation where the AI attacked me with most units on my frontier (nothing you can do about that) and had one or two units deep inside my territory commit ROP-rape.

I honestly don't think the AI gets the rep hit the human does for ROP-rape.

vmxa - I have respect and admiration for all you do to help players on the forum. Nobody does more and you've helped me a lot. If you every try CivIV again, consider open borders. There's no ROP-rape in IV, getting Civs to like you is much more important, and you get gold for it from trade routes.

I understand, but I prefer to play AW. They all eventually gid mad as you cannot keep themhappen in IV, unless yu use all the same religion and settings.
