Immortal University 46: Wang Kon

Immortal/Normal 1 AD
Spoiler :

I went worker first and poly - Ag - masonry - mono - ah - BW - writing - math - construction.

Picked up 2 religions in the capital, settled my commerce city first then the block on AC. Then settled a couple more hammer sites and took the barb city on the peninsula. Of course AC researches construction before alphabet, just finishing alphabet at 25 BC... So despite the prophet coming I'll be in a tight spot financially. Have to get cottages up in my hammer cities. And libraries - Qin has pyramids so I'll be in Rep shortly.

EDIT - Qin does not have alphabet.. but if he does for some reason get it before I'm done I can take currency of him for peace.
EDIT2 - Qin declares at pleased, had the pyramids and appeared to have more land hence the DoW first.

Immortal/normal to 1AD

Spoiler :

Warrior scouted 1NE and saw pigs, but not worth moving for. We meet AC early, but manage to block him off. Qin has a lot of land to his north, though. I saw marble, but with gold I still went for Alphabet, which got me IW and Sailing/masonry/some other techs. I went aesthetics-lit and got:

Civ4ScreenShot0215.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0216.jpg

I am 1 turn from philosophy with nobody founding tao yet. I have two main options: get to democracy and spam some cottages, or go for music and hope I can get sistine and go culture with 2 religions. Culture would be easier, but I don't know how good the Immortal AI is and I am afraid I might fail.

Current Empire:

Civ4ScreenShot0217.jpg

I got squished, but managed to settle 5 good cities and Cheju is all grassland and coast so I can cottage spam it. My capital is cottaged up and has an academy. I will use the next few scientists to bulb through liberalism.

I'm pretty happy with my first run on Immortal so far, I am keeping up with the AI in tech and got philo first at my earliest day ever, I believe.

Tips appreciated!

I started this as just a quick time killer, so I didn't stop to think at any point before after Lib... Then the damn Civ essence dragged me into contemplating a bit more. Overall game time was 4 hours :crazyeye:

To 225AD:

Spoiler :

Yay, the start looks cool. Settle in place, Worker+Ag->AH first, scouting south.

Oh, AC is like 5 tiles away. Gonna rush him.

Oh, AH showed no Horses. BW next.

Oh, BW showed no Copper. Drat. Plan B I guess, which is to abuse FIN on this fine river here. Need to get IW soon to tackle the jungle and get a metal finally.

I went Alpha after the basic stuff, because of the crazy high commerce start. I got it some time before 1kBC, showing:

wk3png.jpg

Yeah, a bit underwhelming

AC won me to the eastern Copper barely, because I had a lot of barb issues for some reason. Many of my busters got bushwhacked on their way into position, and many died in those damn 29.7% barb odd battles. Anyway, my 4th and 5th settler got into position way too early. I wanted to rush them out in case QSH sends settlers there and neglected workers. Well, he never sent any settlers and my ones ended up chilling for a dozen turns since I had no workers to make use of that land.

wk4png.jpg

For some idiotic reason I went after Currency after Alpha, instead of the no-brainer Monarchy. I got IW too, to finally get a metal. Turns out I don't have any. So no copper, horses or iron, and a (peaceful, though) neighbor who has 80% pleased nowarprob.

I decide to take the gambit and get them to pleased and friendly respectively before they DoW me. AC to pleased was easy, QSH took a lot more work. I was pleased with both when I became a land target. I bulbed Philo since there was no religion on our island and then went after CS to gift it to QSH. Gambit paid off and finally at 200AD I made the asslick trade:

wk6png.jpg

Which finally led to my safe steady state (gifted ~3 techs to both for it  ):

wk7png.jpg

To Lib, 860AD:

Spoiler :

For some stupid reason I took Pacifism along with HR, never minding the fact I was mass producing warriors left and right for some HR FIN cottage cheese. Anyway, this helped to get my second GS for a capital Academy, and then this (after stockpiling a truckload of cash as you can see, I didn't think I was in danger of losing lib - otherwise I wouldn't have waited for this).

wk8png.jpg

Which led to Lib->Nat at 860AD. I promptly started building the Taj, which I also got.

To Alpha Centauri, 1902AD:

Spoiler :

Here's the empire at 1210AD. Oxford is 3 turns away, after that my science was sth like 650b-50g. I wasn't in any rush to go meet the other continent because I had to stay in Tao for the time being. Was good, after Vicky came to meet me I could already adopt FR and go meet the rest of the bunch. Here's the tech about at that time, plus a snapshot of my huge military

wk9png.jpg

wk10png.jpg

wk11png.jpg

I thought for a while if I could go space with what I got, but since the other continent was a massive teching lovefest I thought I had to get some extra land. For some reason QSH was the only one not quite on the tech sled, so I went the most boneheaded attack composition so far, 100% Infantry. Even more dumb than my previous IU army, Inf/Treb  I had zero hammers, so I went AL->Demo for teeny-tiny rushbuy, less than 600gpt after I bought the banks. Adopting US SERIOUSLY farked my happy situation. Luckily I could sell my Coal to Sulevi for a bunch of happy resources, and was counting on getting a lot more from QSH.

QSH had just Knights and LBs at the time, so it was viable. DoW at 1555AD:

wk12png.jpg

He got GP fast and Rifling along the way, this didn't really slow me down much. I continued normal teching quite fast since I had US+Levee production now.

wk13png.jpg

From there I slogged towards space. Rami was doing a nice culture run and I debated whether I should delay SS and make a razer army on the side. I was too bored to bother so I just went straight space. When I was 5 turns from launching I bribed Rami to DoW on HC, and then bribed Sulevi to DoW on Rami  This delayed his third city nicely, resulting in:

wk14png.jpg

And damn, they really duked it out. Rami got 3 GGs in their war and Sulevi got 2. Anyway, no Great Work surprises from Rami. The idiot Suleiman capitulated Rami a turn before I won. Nice work, taking a vassal that's 13 turns away from a culture win :D

wk15.jpg

^BigTime:

Spoiler :

What's your plan on dealing with QSH? You should probably either make it of the utmost priority to get him to Friendly or get some Longbows to not get run over if he decides to DoW.

You could also think about trying to fit in a 7th city somewhere, such as south of Pjongjang if there's room (= no blocking roman cities) or 3N of Wonsan. Cheju is going to have a hell of a time trying to get a University (Seowon, whatever) to unlock your Oxford :)

Choosing a VC (or any kind of longer term game plan) here is a tough cookie, I was in a very similar situation to you in my game. Good luck ;)

Immortal/normal to Liberalism

Spoiler :

Teched out peacefully while developing my cottages. One bulb towards lib was enough, another bulb was used on printing press.

This allowed:

Civ4ScreenShot0218.jpg

A very powerful tech for my cottage-heavy economy. Happiness is now an issue, so drama is a rare priority for theatres grant a lot of happy with dyes.

Current Empire:

Civ4ScreenShot0219.jpg

Communism, then Infantry + Arty is my plan. I am pretty sure I can get the Kremlin, and I will be very strong with that. I doubt AC would get Infantry before me, so I could use just infantry against him.

@Silu

Spoiler :

We were all confucian until AC went FR off Spaya. This basically made DoW chances on me 0, with peace weight and all. I belive he's friendly now with Bureau + religion. He never went to warmode the whole game, yet.

Immortal/normal to 1852 UN win :)

Spoiler :

Beelined communism, end-game wonder:

Civ4ScreenShot0220.jpg

Beelined AL, slider off. Rushed in money infrastructure earlier, and am putting out 1000 gpt with 6 cities. Pretty nice. Was going to hit AC, but he went from no rifles to infantry by the time I was done rushbuying. Oh well, Plan B:

Civ4ScreenShot0221.jpg

Qin is DEMOLISHED! Does not get anything better than rifles the whole war, no arty needed. I'll take infantry against rifles:

(oops thought I had pic, anyway left him with two cities, he had about 15 votes in UN, didn't take cap b/c it would mess up diplo win)

Beeline UN, huayna is #2 pop. Get vicky by running rep, Ram by OR + NSR, and Suleiman from basic stuff and a tribute:

Civ4ScreenShot0222.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0223.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0224.jpg

A diplo victory, my first immortal win!!! Yay!

K/D ratio is nice:

Civ4ScreenShot0225.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0226.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0227.jpg

Score:

Civ4ScreenShot0228.jpg

What a fun game! My first immortal win ever was a blast. Kremlin makes rushbuying so good, but I felt that even though we had Gold in the BFC with a fin leader, I still was squished early and if I had even 8 cities I would had ended this so much sooner. Nevertheless, it was an average map and a fun one.

Thanks for hosting TMIT! :)

Spoiler :

Peaceweight? That has nothing to do with human-AI relations. Or do you mean overall aggressiveness? Until he was Friendly there is a significant danger of DoW due to the human here being his only land target, even if he was at Pleased and even if he liked AC less.

But, nice game and congraz for the win :goodjob: Best win date so far in this IU to boot. :) I thought about diplo but thought it could have been too risky - the #2 in pop fluctuated a lot and I could have lost the UN race with the high tech pace on this map.

Spoiler :

I meant the peaceweight between AC and Qin. They were auto-annoyed from first contact. Oh well, Qin never declare on me and I was never in a war until I declared on Qin. I always thought if there was a chance Qin went warmode, he'd go after AC. AC also bordered him far up north with an island city where both Qin and AC has cities.

As for the win, thanks. Feels good to get my first Immortal win. :)

Spoiler :
Thank you for putting up the game. I don't know how to take screenshots. I got squished hard by the flanking AI and then forced into a bad 5th clty spot by a persistent, lucky babarian archer. Looking at my small empire, I decided cultural victory was my best bet. A great artist popped fast and I used him to expand my area enough for a marginal 6th city to build the last temple I needed for a second mandir. I spread my religion to both neighbors to keep peace. The AI's were just starting to make spaceship parts in dangerous numbers when I won culturally in 1925.

Cultural Victory on Prince (Normal Speed), 1925

It was my third win on prince ever, first cultural one!

Today's lesson seems to be

Spoiler :
rushing your neighbor is better than not rushing your neighbor
Spoiler :
especially if he starts five tiles away

What I mean is the way TMIT started the game must have made for a MUCH easier game than the approach taken by most other players.

Spoiler :

You mean the approach of "find the strategic resource before it's too late"? :p Of course almost everyone would rush here (at Cats, latest), given a chance. That's not how the dice always roll, though, on a map like this with a single viable stratreso over 10 tiles away. :)

520 AD
Spoiler :

War went well, and I switched to Rep after capturing Beijing and the pyramids in 100 AD. Used the gold to tech Aesthetics for fail gold and to trade with AC for alphabet.

250 AD and AC gives me meditation when I ask so that I can build the Shwedagon Paya for ~150 in fail gold. After alphabet I whip a couple spies in.

Civ4ScreenShot0389.jpg

Off conquest gold I pick up literature and chop the Great Library in Beijing. I take peace with Qin for currency and metal casting, since I'm going to steal calendar off of AC. The only 2 techs I needed were IW for the jungle and calendar for the +5 or so happy with all the calendar resources already hooked up in Qin's land. Qin gave AC MC the turn after I took it from him so I had to research CoL and trade that to AC for IW. And I stopped a couple turns later.

I should have enough men to finish off Qin (10 axe 6 hwacha), just have to whip a couple galleys to get that city on the island. I have to decide on caste next for beakers, or whip out courthouses. I've got about 100 city maintenance, and I also want EPs so I can continue stealing from AC..

Oh AC started on paper, without machinery so I could take him as well. But I'll trade with him and probably steal another good tech.

Jewish Shrine is only 10 gpt right now. But with AP up I'll be sure to spread it around which will get me another 10.

EDIT - I wait 2 more turns on the spy and calendar is 180 EPs??? I've got 500+ on him from focusing EP on AC the whole time.

Civ4ScreenShot0390.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0393.jpg

Immortal/Normal 1020 AD
Spoiler :

Stayed in slavery as I realized I also could use the spies that come with courthouses. Whipped some courthouses, otherwise let my cities grow into cottages - I thought I had enough units to take out Qin. Had captured 6 workers off Qin so I was in a great position at the start of the round.

I stole Theology from AC, I've gotten calendar and Theology for less than 600 EP. Then the BUG mod let me know AC had a bunch of gold so I made this trade. I'm going to go for Divine Right and the +2 gold tower thing next so I need monarchy.

Civ4ScreenShot0395.jpg

Ended up getting 2 GEs. Its late so I burn 1 on UoS because with so many cities it will be worth it. Also notice Qin has 4 longbows :( I only had 2 galleys so it took me 4 trips to get everyone over and he whipped 2 longbows a galley and a trireme. I get the city, but have to take peace for HBR 50 gold and a map that shows me he has 2 more cities on another island next door.

Civ4ScreenShot0397.jpg

And I just got DR in. Someone beat me to it by 4 turns so I burned a GE on the gold tower. I should be able to get another for Mining Inc. Which will be a big +11 hammers/city. Notice the +32 EP. I'm about to steal machinery and will steal compass and optics over the next 15 turns, less if I run some more spies.

Civ,

Spoiler :

I'd prefer you'd have settled as I did. You can see in my 1 AD save above. And cottages especially the capital. And I think its important to have seen all the hammers available if you had picked up those city locations I did. Always a good idea early after exploration to think about being able to use your UU. China you know would likely be attacking at some point..

Grashopa,

Spoiler :
I settled the bronze city to get the pigs in the BDC and to hook up the copper before a boarder pop. I was really worried about a barb invasion having not teched archery (an invasion that never came.).

I agree that perhaps the marble city could have been north 1.

Note to self: when you have a neighbor 5 squares away, you rush him. Wish I had done that.

Thanks for the feedback.
