Is there a way to make it impossible for the AI to enter your borders without declaring war or having a RoP agreement, as is the case in Civ 4? I'm getting absolutely sick of the AI sending hordes of settlers across my territory and ending up with a total chequerboard of a map. Of course I could kill them, but I don't want to have to go to war every time an enemy unit enters my territory. Thanks for any help :goodjob:

maybe a combat unit with hidden nationalty in your inventory that can do the cleaning job within your territory?

If you're playing on a pre-made map with pre-placed cities, you could make a no-graphics unit (I assume there's one in the Library somewhere) and place one on every hex of your border (and one on every hex of every other nation's border too), and so the whole map would be lined with these invisible units that you'd have to attack to get through. They could have a really low defence, but attacking them would trigger a war unless the attacker had a hidden nationality unit to clear through the barrier first.

In pre-placed scenarios, I use a scad of Invisible and Immobile "Border Guard" units (0-1-0 1HP.) Any incursion thereby immediately leads to war.

On a random map - good luck, as the AI will in no way implement this strategy.

Best.

If you've got unit maintenance to spare, you can always put a unit on every tile of your border...

If you do go with the border guard idea, you'll also want to remove the Requires Support option for it.

On a custom map you can also make a lot of boarder territory impassible to wheeled units then make most/all units wheeled and the AI can't get in. Means you have to sacrifice one terrain type though to become this impassable terrain. Or just put entirely impassable mountains along boarders.

I'm guessing you are playing random maps though. All I can suggest for that if there are any natural bottle necks block them early with your units. I hate the way the AI marches settlers through your territory too. Can be very tedious and the checkerboard civ spread is very annoying too.

Yeah I'm playing random, seems like I'll just have to put up with it then, thanks for the suggestions everybody :)

Don't put up with it, play CCM. while it is different, AI doesn't have enough Settlers to pull the stunt off and plenty of invisible units (for you and AI) to prevent incursions.
